Canucks-Islanders Preseason Game 1 Open Thread
GAME TIME: 7:30 PST
TV: Sportsnet, NHL.com, MSG, and streamed live at Canucks.com
UPDATE: 2:41 PM: Pelletier has lots of photos of the Canucks arriving in Terrace, the autograph hounds, and team practice photos up on his site. Geez, Woody, crack a smile. He looks like someone insulted his mother.
UPDATE 1:52 PM: Rejoice! Rick Rypien is saying he's 100% mentally and physically.
UPDATE: 11:02 AM: The official Canucks roster for tonight is:
Goalies: Andrew Raycroft and Corey Schneider.
Defensemen:: Kevin Bieksa, Willie Mitchell, Aaron Rome, Brad Lukowich, Nolan Baumgartner, Yann Sauve, Shane O'Brien and Evan Oberg.
Forwards: Dave Scatchard, Ronald Petrovicky, Jannik Hansen, Rick Rypien, Michael Grabner, Kyle Wellwood, Alexandre Bolduc, Eric Walsky, Guillaume Desbiens, Mario Bliznak, Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Sergei Shirokov.
Tip to Brian Compton who is blogging the event at NHL.com.
UPDATE: 10:45 AM: The Canucks' plane circled the Terrace airport for a while and couldn't land because of the heavy fog. They have officially landed though. No Luongo. We knew that already. Tip to Joe Pelletier, who's texting me these updates.
Also, a few Canucks were on stage at the Canadian Country Music Awards at GM Place last night. The Province has that picture as well as an article on the Sedins calling Samuelsson a dirty player. Samuelsson may get top line duty after all. Not 100% yet. Is he the next Anson Carter? I'm still stuck on giving Burrows a shot there, but he may be moving to line 2.
UPDATE: 8:20 AM: Great article on Mark Parrish at the Province today. He was "giddy" when the Canucks came calling, but is a roster spot possible for this guy?
UPDATE: 12:43 AM: Grandpa (I mean Mathieu Schneider's) first blog at CDC. Know how to use a keyboard, Matt? No way in hell Schneider or Hodgson play as both are recovering from shoulder injuries/surgeries. I'm anticipating seeing Sergei Shirokov play perhaps with Wellwood.
-Yes Mitchell, the fishing is prime up here in Northern BC. Now, don't suck! Wellwood: Get an atlas and get to know your BC geography!
-Tick tock. Tick tock goes the Sundin clock. No word from Mats as training camp has begun. Mike Gillis gave "Sudden" a TC deadline and that has passed. Is it all but over for Sundin, or would Gillis backtrack and let him return at a later date?
Come and hang out here all day (and night) for the Canucks' first preseason game in Terrace, BC.
So it begins. There is so much to be settled with the Canucks' roster from the goaltending out. That is what preseason is for. Hat tip to Missy for providing the veteran Canucks roster for tonight's game:
Offense: Sergei Shirokov, Mario Bliznak, Robert Petrovicky, Michael Grabner, Kyle Wellwood, Guillam Desbiens, Rick Rypien
Defense:Willie Mitchell, Kevin Bieksa, Brad Lukowich, Nolan Baumgartner, Michael Funk, Lawrence Nycholat, Evan Oberg, Shane O’Brien
Goaltending: Andrew Raycroft and Cory Schneider (No Luongo=no surprise. The Canucks need a long and hard look at who warms the bench during Lou's games played.)
Tip to Joe Pelletier for finding the basic Islanders' lineup:
Forwards: Jon Sim, Tim Jackman, Jeff Tambellini, Nate Thompson, Blake Comeau, Josh Bailey, Sean Bentivoglio, Matt Moulson, Greg Moore, Greg Mauldin, Trevor Smith, Jeremy Reich.
Defenseman: Andy Sutton, Jack Hillen, Mark Flood, Andrew MacDonald, Dustin Kohn, Freddy Meyer
Goalies- Scott Munroe, Nathan Lawson
Right, not the biggest names for game 1 in a Hockeyville town, but it's preseason.
We'll keep you updated all day with further roster updates and news as the day goes along.

hmm, Mitchell and Bieksa, but no Erhoff? And that’ll be interesting to see, 3 forward lines and 4 defensive pairings.
no, it’s called the vets roster, the rest of the roster will be revealed at some point today.

Not sure why it was called that, it’s just a few names the media threw out there yesterday.

Oh okay, I see we have the full roster up now, anyway.

Go Nucks!!
Fkn rights, first game of the year. Kick their ass Nuckles. I am wondering what coach V will do for the lines? Crazy guy is always messin around.
-wow, you guys must have been bored last night, putting the thread up so early.
-that comment from wellwood about not knowing where terrace was made my morning
-i can’t wait for the game :)
GO CANUCKS GO!
Well, with all the Hockeyville hoopla going on, I figured I should just make one big post, plus there’s content below that I don’t want to bury too far down the page.

LOL
Coach Alain Vigneault will experiment with line combinations with four games in the next six days.
I went to watch the local Junior B team’s try-outs over the weekend and now the Canucks on TV. F*ck me I love hockey season. I do wish I could still go to games at GM place but living up in Fort St John makes it pretty hard. Only 5 more hours til the puck drops.
Terrace is better known as the town you have to drive through to get to Prince Rupert.
To be honest I’m not a fan of any town past my hometown of Smithers (Terrace, Kitimat or Rupert.) But I used to hang out in Terrace quite a bit at one point in my life. Good times were had by all!

Head East, Young Man...
The motorcycle riding around Nelson is AWESOME! Friendly riders, too; even the Harleys.
I think Johnny Cash said it best when he sang: “I’ve been everywhere, man!”

Anyone wanna predict a score for tonight? I say 5-2 Canucks.
I get this feeling that Wellwood is going to lead the team in preseason scoring this year.
4-2 Islanders
…and Bieksa takes a dive in the sixth!
Just popping in. For a preseason game that’s actually televised, I’m fairly disappointed in the Isles lineup, as there aren’t even any big prospects who I’m burning to see. A lot of journeymen and AHL signees. But … yeah, preseason.
Seeing the small arena alive should be really cool though!
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
It’s not the nucks vs. the islanders, it’s the whossits vs. the whothey. Go whossits!

Kyle Wellwood would beg to differ. He’d say: “It’s MISTER Whossits to you, dick!”

That's a grim lookin' boy.
Wellington’s got his game face on from Day 1, and I like it.
I really think the rush he got from being banged up in last year’s playoffs, and being relied upon for his defence as much as for him scoring, has changed the player. Definitely one of the two candidates (with Bernier) for “Most Improved Canuck”.
5-2 Good Guys.
5-2. That’s mine. You can’t have it. Get your own prediction! Pfft!
Oh yeah, I love the Waifwood. Always have. So much potential sitting right there.
can someone check on this please?
although our roster reports are saying that Mitchell is playing tonight, NHL.com is saying that he only came up for the festivities and won’t be in the game.
???
GO CANUCKS GO!
Makes sense. Good on Willie for showing up at least. Well add in Yann Sauve or Even Oberg….

computer to my left, math homework to my right, dinner on my lap, blanket behind me, and tv set to rogers sportsnet. yeah, i’m ready for this.
btw, does anyone know how long an inning usually ends up being? the toronto bluejays game that’s taking up sportsnet is at the top of the ninth.
GO CANUCKS GO!
Speaking of the Rangers...
Watching “Junk Raiders” until then. A team recycles old toss-aways and tries to build something of value in one month.
that girl on sportsnet connected just blew it.
she just had to hesitate and check her paper to see who the islanders were playing tonight.
GO CANUCKS GO!
Canucks, blackout, listening to team 1040 online...
same ole same ole.
they’re just presenting stuff to the Terrace Hockeyville organizing commitee right now.
GO CANUCKS GO!

yeah, Don Cherry just scored with the local bar dancer

Yeah, yeah. It was a PP goal by maybe Shirokov.
Seriously confused.

Either I'm insane or the TV is about 5 minutes behind the radio.
If I’m sane, the Canucks will score on this.
Just in case anybody has Bell Express Vu in Canada, the Centre Ice Channels…(433 tonight I believe) is showing this game for free if you’re not in BC and the game is blacked out on Sportsnet Pacific.
Islanders have to shoot high on Rayzor. He goes down a lot.

He does, doesn’t he? Certainly a lot more stamina

they just showed an ad for NHL10 by EASports.
there was a nice (animated) hit by hordichuck.

Grabner not done much yet in my eyes… thoughts?

Raycroft actually looked pretty good out there. That goal was a nearly impossible save.
I’d be alright with him being back up to Luongo this year. You think about his career.. he lost his confidence playing behind an abysmal Toronto defence, then went to Colorado where it wasn’t really a whole lot better. He’s obviously still got the ability, and I think in midseason form he’d be quicker getting across the net and better rebound control. That would free Gillis up to use Schneider (and Salo?) as trade bait because really.. is there any way he should be a back up or minor leaguer after what he did in Manitoba last year?
Blackouts and regional broadcast rights
First of all, huge thank you to fistpump for posting that link!!! I noticed a few people showing some confusion about the blackout. I’ve dealt with this nonsense before (lived 7+ years in Toronto) and have a decent handle on this issue, so I thought I’d chip in if anyone is still confused.
Basically Sportsnet is only licensed to broadcast Canucks games in BC. So if you have digital cable/satellite and get Sportsnet Pacific, they will blackout the games on SNP if you are outside BC. If you purchase the NHL Centre Ice package, you will get the games on the Centre Ice channel, but SNP will still be blacked out if you try to access it during the game broadcast.
So, unlike say NFL blackouts, the issue is not about ticket sales. On the contrary, the people getting blacked out are the people who could not possibly be at the game. I think the main issues are regional broadcast rights and league revenue from the NHL Centre Ice package. I was really hoping that this wouldn’t apply to preseason (I haven’t ordered Centre Ice for this season yet) but apparently it does.
As I wrote this comment the online feed dropped. Unfortunately CDC streaming is also blacked out. Team 1040 it is!

I'm going "Tie"
The kid came back well, and anyone standing after those hits deserves at least that.
Don’t think we missed too much on that. Pretty bush though. Stars were Shirokov-Sims-Lukowich.
I can agree with that. I thought him and Obrien were the best D’men, though Oberg was good too.
The Canucks forwards had their moments. But Walsky, Petrovisky, and of course Hansen and Ripper, and Wellwood.
But the Man of the Match, to steal from the English, was Shirokov.
Nice hands eh?
vancitydan
I won't say we're eager, but...
200 comments for a pre-season game?
This place is gonna get busy in another month!
Ripper.
Fck there he goes after another giant. Rypien is a fkn pitbull, with very “piston like punches” hahaha I missed hockey so much. Thanks Rick you made my month!
Not bad for a first exhibition game. Noticed Shirokov, Desbiens, Rome and Rypien. Hope the Terrace fans enjoyed themselves. How are they going to watch River Kings v. Steelheads after this?
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
