Jannik Hansen Re-signs
So how many third liners can one team have? Never enough says uberlord Mike Gillis as he has successfully resigned Jannik Hansen, his second RFA in a week (TSN has it too).
Capgeek, who gets the big ol' glove tap because they broke the signing of the contract early this morning, has the contract pegged at $550,000 deal. The deal is also one-way* two way which was a concern for the Dane in this entire process (see here and here). As the Sun notes, his salary will be reduced to $75,000 if he is sent to Manitoba, assuming he passes waivers first.
It also leaves Vancouver with about $2.5 to $3 million left in cap space depending on where you look. Not a great deal left to extend a certain someone and replace a certain missing Swede on the blueline. Couple in the fact Hansen will now join a third line battle with Mason Raymond and Kyle Wellwood, prospects Michael Grabner and Cody Hodgson as well as a potential mix of others like Desbiens, Glass, Pope, Shirokov, Walsky, White and even Schroeder at training camp and something doesn't add up.
He isn't CEO, President, GM and uberlord for nothing folks.
* Thanks to Bitterguy for the heads up.

Thanks, I fixed it. None of the reports confirmed it when I wrote the piece, but “rumors” had it pegged at a one year deal. Either way he’s got a fight in front of him. I can’t imagine, if with teams being responsible financially this summer, he’ll clear waivers if that’s what comes of this.

Good on.
Not much of a bite, that price. Waivers would be a problem, though: I could still see a trade coming up before the season starts. The ‘Nucks are at 22 players on the roster, and that’s without Hodgson…
Love this guy’s speed, love the guy’s drive, like his hands okay. Wanting more ice time is exactly what you want from third line players.
Remember his freak out in game one last season? That’s what you want to see from third liners too. I hope he has a killer camp. Even bundled in a trade I can’t see him bringing that much in return that, say, a Mason Raymond asset would.

Heh – no, I didn’t. Gotta protect your captain! Er, goalie! Er, wait…
I really like this guy. Even if we don’t pick up any more forwards, there may be tryouts up front to fill a second-line role, or AV may be thinking of tossing the second line (Kessler’s) out as a “checking” line that has to be checked themselves, increasing ice time (and scoring chances) for the theoretical third line, leaving 8-10 minutes for some juice from the fourth line.
This gives the penalty killers/power players who live on the second line a touch less ice time, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all. The coach does love his line-matching games, and it’s going to give him a bit more versatility to have some scoring and/or puck control on the third.
Speed kills: wouldn’t mind seeing competition for the third-second lines with Ray-O’-Light and the Great Dane. Even if skill ends up on the third, there’s still special team ice time to hand out.
The cap space left
isn’t that bad, because capgeek gives Vancouver $2.6M of cap space with 23 players, and teams can choose to carry as few as 20 players if they choose. It’s probably doable if they want to add another $3.5M guy by carrying 21 players. That would eliminate 3 salaries from the existing lineup (saving a minimum of $1.65M) and adding a new $3.5M.
So, after we pick up Zherdev, who are the three to leave?
What? You did say a $3.5 million player, right?
I kid, I kid! I hope.
True, but I’d be nervous about entering a season with a top six winger like Demitra and a top four defenseman like Salo and a razor thin cap margin in case when either goes down with a significant injury. Injuries to defense alone sunk them two seasons ago, hate to see it happen again.

It would be scary but if that $3.5M is spent on, say, upgrading either of those positions (more likely defence as Gillis said he’d add someone there), then maybe it won’t be as scary anymore. Also, even if you have unlimited cap space it won’t really help you when multiple injuries hit, because there just aren’t many players available for trade during the season, especially when the team doesn’t have much depth in terms of prospects. The only thing cap space buys you in face of injuries is that the team won’t be prevented from calling up players (see Calgary before this past Playoffs).
Hansen’s a nice guy to have for depth but I’d like to see some breathing room
for the Raymond’s(showed more flashes late in the season), Grabner’s(pure goal scorer, fingers crossed) and CoHo’s(the future of the Nucks) early in the regular season.*
*dependent on none of the above showing up with a spare tire for a belly.
we do need a Russian.
Though I wonder what Dany Heatley thinks of Vancouver?

10% until the end of camp...
August 5th folks. Relax…deep breath…a month until camp still…
You can go over the cap until the end of camp. So, let’s let Mr. Gillis do his job. We need D’, and have forwards, and many options. Its all good for now. Hansen is a good asset, and with the amount of talent percolating in the Canucks system we should just be happy.
He is the Prez, after all…!
Peace

Yeah, we may just have to wait that long until a deal is pulled

Nuck Forwards Looking Interesting
Line One 3 Swedish trio
Line Two Kesser Burrows and Demitra
Line Three Welwood, Hansen, Raymond, Grabner, and Hodgson
Line 4 Rypen, Johnson and Hordichuk
Hmm I love the look of Line Three. This is what the Canucks have been missing – a real sense of competition amoung the forwards. I think Gillis will close the book on Sundin. These 5 on line 3 and prehaps another dark horse will slug it out in training camp. The line 3 group of young forwards pushed each other last year and will push each further this fall.. Training camp will be fun to watch. In the end it may be very difficult not to keep all 5 and if that is the case something will have to give on line two.
Demitra for a top 6 defenceman is starting to look like a real possibility.
Welcome, thanks for joining the site!
I think AV will give Burrows every chance to stick around with the Sedins and keep Sammy, Kes and Demo on the second line. Just my thought, but it’s good to know he has the option to switch back and forth. Finding the third Sedin is always so damn hard.
Whoever ends up on the checking line, I think it’ll likely push Hordichuk out for a few games here and there. I see him getting far less ice time this year (especially considering his general stats and Corsi were horrific) in favor of a kid.
The more I think about it, the more I fear Raymond or Grabner may be on their way out for the top four defenseman we need. Hansen won’t bring strong talent back alone and I don’t know if mgmt is willing to part with Wellwood.
But totally agree: the training camp battles, for the first time in a long time, will be damn interesting.

interesting
Holy moly i forgot about Steve Bernier the plot thickens!!
Ok we are in top 4 position now if Mike can pull the trigger.
BUT we don’t have a buttload of money to spend on a top 4. He has to come at a good price.

Yeah, but I don’t see Demitra and his $4 mill going anywhere. Raymond or Grabner getting tossed offers no cap relief at all.
