Canucks-Luongo Have Reached Deal On Extension - In Principal *UPDATED*
According to Sportsnet, the Canucks and Roberto Luongo will agree to a deal before the September 13 deadline set by Roberto himself. There's just some minor tweaks that they are working out. If Sportsnet is correct we can expect an announcement soon. Excuse my cautiousness, but I'm not going to jump up and down until it is officially done.
*Update* The Vancouver Sun has contacted Mike Gillis, who is fishing on the Queen Charlotte Islands, and Gillis refused to confirm the story.
"I'm not confirming and I'm not commenting on that but I remain confident we'll have an agreement in place before training camp," he said.
Gillis then closed his cell phone and was attacked by a bunch of naked hippies.
*Update* Sept. 1: Luongo, who is still in Montreal told the French CBC site: "I can not confirm anything for now, but I can tell you it's going very well in the negotiations," Luongo called the 10-12 year length "possible". More on that here.
Is this really news? M'eh, not really. I don't care if it is or isn't. I'm getting excited about the potential deal! I hope Gillis goes the 10-year route with the front-loaded contract and an overall cushion on the average yearly cap hit.

I don’t really call this news, as Gillis has been saying something to this effect for quite a while (we are very close).
What I really want to know is how is Gillis gonna get under the cap with enough room for Sundin in the next month.
That’s going to be the amazing part. What he says he’ll do though. He is a man of his word

…And by minor tweak mr luongo means a 15 year deal (front loaded of course, go with the precedent damn it all)

I don’t think so. I think they were further apart last week than now. Minor tweaks don’t include a 5 year differential in length of term. This is news because the deal is practically done.

Guesses (realistically) as to what the tweaks are? Captaincy? Incentives perhaps?

Gotta be a bonus in there for Vezina/Jennings/Conn Smythe/Stanley Cup
Hasn’t just about every NHL contract Lu has signed had those clauses in them already?

I like hearing rumours like this, I will be very happy if the deal get’s confirmed.
Intrerested to see the terms.
Let's speculate....
I say 6 years at $7.7 million per season cap hit.

More Good Times:
Luongo:……and I want Marvin Gardens, Pennsylvania Avenue, Park Place and Boardwalk.
MG: Deal. You still want Oriental Avenue too?
Luongo: Nah, give it to Raycroft. Cory gets Kentucky Avenue.
(MG and Roberto shake hands)

can’t help but notice the placement of a few teams on the board…..
toronto as boardwalk?
montreal as park place? okay, maybe a little…
st. louis is worth more than canucks??
how are the sharks and canes at the bottom?
then again, it is a board game….
GO CANUCKS GO!
Well, the Blues should be ahead of the Canucks. They have been in the League longer and have made playoff appearances MUCH MORE

Haha! In the Monopoly World Edition, Vancouver has higher property Value than Toronto! Based on a voting system, Montreal and Riga were Boardwalk and Park Place respectively.

Go, Naked Hippies!
Ain’t much in the world that’s more fun!
(Yeah, I’m from Salt Spring Island. Your point?)
There’s more naked hippies there than on the Queen Charlottes. I live 3 hours from the QCI. I should go track Gillis down. His boat probably tipped over.

Dude…. it’s a seven hour ride on the ferry. Do they have cell coverage yet? They didn’t when I lived there, or the last time I visited (I think it was 2006 or something).
No no no. I live southeast of QCI…inland

An aside
Why does everyone in the NHL fish? Seriously, it’s not that enjoyable. Unless they are 20 sheets to the wind and, in that case, I appreciate the near uniform appeal.

As a NY’er I must say: Plaxico’s gun incident was the absolute best thing, even Giants fans agreed. Damn near killed himself, lost his job and is now going to jail all for going to a club where he was a VIP already. Just sheer brilliance, they should name an award after him.

Ah..just woke up from a nap. I heard that too. The rumor keeps floating that it’s in the $6.5 – 7 million range as well. If that’s the case, some Twitter people need jobs at TSN

Sean, I am hearing 10 years at 50-60 mil.
So, the Cap hit will be between 5-6 mil.

At this point only believe that a deal is near. I’m not paying attention to numebers. But I will say that I think he’s gonna get an average cap hit of $7.5 million. Just my 2 cents.

This is the first I'm reading the Sun's story but...
Internet speculation on a Roberto Luongo contract signing — fuelled by a Twitter missive attributed to the man himself — surged Monday night, but Vancouver Canuck general manager Mike Gillis wasn’t taking the bait.
Internet speculation? That’s a fake Twitter account, c’mon. We’re not seriously blaming blogs for this when the main stream media stlll can’t figure out Twitter are we?
'Nucks Misconduct - Housing Swedish Millionaires Since 2000.
If this turns out to be false, and the MSM turns around and blame the blogs, when it was Sportnet that originally reported that their “sources” report the signing starting the discussion, it will be another nail in their credibility coffin.
I kind of hacked that Luongo guy on Twitter. What an idiot. Geez, CKAC radio stated it first, then Sportsnet. What in the hell is that article talking about?

The Vancouver Canucks have yet to officially announce they have re-signed their captain, but several reports suggest the two sides have agreed on a four-year contract extension worth an estimated $28 million.
That from CTV News site. Geez I can’t wait for this to end. I hope that’s not the deal either.

Well, when Lui is signed, is Schneider trade bait? Is Raycroft (shudder) this year’s backup? And who mans the goal in Manitoba if the aforementioned goes down? Seems Gillis is stocking up The Moose to be winners as well as the parent club.
Can’t be, not after all this work. Schneider is the back up unless he fumbles at which point we take the cheapest option (Raycroft) at the deepest position on the team. Not bad work really.

by Yankee Canuck on Sep 1, 2009 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Gillis & Schneider should both want Schneider to play some NHL games and do well and look good, esp early in the year, so I expect to see him play in a fair number of them for a while.
If he shines then he can be traded and get on with his career and the Canucks can get some value in return. If he doesn’t shine, he’s got a problem.
Play where? With the Canucks? He’s not going to get much time there. No way in hell they lower Lou’s playing time methinks
by Sean Zandberg on Sep 1, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions
In the State of the Franchise presser, Gillis sounded pretty into the idea of having Shneider as the backup.
I agree with MG again.
I think its time to see what he can do. playing 12-20 games in Vancouver is better at this point than another stellar year in the AHL.
He needs to be an NHLer in all aspects, methinks…
vancitydan
oops!
Gadzook…
Did I really?
