Potential Canucks Trading Partners
There has already been enough speculation over what free agents are left for Mike Gillis to take a stab at to fill in the holes (especially in the top 4 defence pairings). But allow me to use NHL Numbers and analyze each NHL team to see where they are at with quantities at various positions and cap dollars spent. Maybe this can shed a bit of an idea as to another avenue for Mike Gillis to acquire 1 or 2 of the players needed. I'll add my personal opinion on proposals as well.
-Have enough forwards but are lacking about 3 defencemen.
-What are their plans with Jean-Sebastien Giguere if Jonas Hiller is now the #1 goalie?
-$12 million left in the bank.
-Proposal: No help to Vancouver.
- lacking in all areas. Still need to re-sign Kari Lehtonen.
Proposal: Let 'em rot.
-Running out of money and need another forward, defenceman and backup goalie. Kessel has not yet been signed.
-Proposal: Schneider for Kessel
-too many goalies and defencemen and not enough forwards.
-Proposal: Grabner for Rivet. Tellqvist may be heading back home to Sweden.
-still need to sign Tuomo Ruutu..
-have one too many D-men. Hence one commenter saying Dennis Seidenberg would be a great option.
Proposal: Seidenberg for my nutsack.
-The Flames look set. They're close to the cap limit but whatevs.
-Proposal: No, we don't want Bertuzzi. I will cut anyone's main artery who says they want him back in Van.
-With the potential signing of Versteeg, the Hawks will need to trade a forward or 2 to acquire another defenceman (or 2) and a backup goalie.
-Proposal: Still interested in Versteeg? At the expense of not getting a valid top 4 d-man?
-Way too many forwards and not enough defencemen.
-Proposal: Can't help them and they can't help us.
Colorado
-a clear case of too many defencemen and not enough forwards. They still have to re-sign several free agent forwards.
-Proposal: Wellwood for Preissing or Salei. Dream bigm Arnold. Dream big.
-All kinds of question marks in Dallas. Do they re-sign Zubov and / or Sydor? If so, they have too many d-men.
-Proposal: I'd gamble on Sydor. Brendan Morrison anyone? I didn't think so. You get that feeling that Vancouver is the only place he belongs though. His body has worn down however.
-Too many defencemen and not enough forwards. Plus, they are right under the cap and Hudler has not been re-signed yet.
-Proposal: Draft pick for Brett Lebda or Derek Meech.
-The Oilers have too many defencemen and are closing in on the cap max.
-Proposal: Draft pick for Ladislav Smid.
-Any takers on UFA's Nick Boynton or Steve Eminger? Other than that the Panthers look set.
-So many holes to fill in L.A.
-Proposal: Would you take a chance on Frolov? Not me. Too pricey. How about Denis Gauthier? Exactly. Fuck it.
Jack Johnson however is an intriguing option. I just wonder what kind of $$$ he wants.
-Are these guys seriously in the running for Saku Koivu? The have about $4 million left to spend and haven't even signed Kyle Brodziak yet.
-Proposal: A stab at UFA Kurtis Foster wouldn't hurt my feelings. Marc-Andre Bergeron can suck a whale genital as far as I'm concerned.
-Look at that shit show in Hab-land. UFA's: Robert Lang, Alex Tanguay, Saku Koivu, Francis Bouillion, Patrice Brisebois, Mathieu Dandenault. RFA's: Tomas Plekanec, etc. Talk about an overhaul.
-Proposal: Can't afford the forwards unless a trade happens to lose salary, even though Tanguay would look great on Line 2. Is Bouillion any good? I hate the Habs.
-Wow. I didn't realize they had so many positions to fill. May they rest in peace.
-They are close to being in position.
-Proposal: Would you sign Niclas Havelid as a UFA?
-A great-looking young team.
-Proposal: Don't see them doing much. Mike Sillinger and Dean McAmmond are UFA's. Any takers? I've always been a fan of McAmmond but he's not what we need.
-Oh boy, Sather must be sucking back 50 cigars a day with this mess. So much work to be done there.
-Proposal: Fuck the Rangers...except...I still think Paul Mara would be a good UFA signing. Derek Morris can rot in obscurity for all I care.
-Yikes! Look at all those players there. The Sens have to move Dany Heatley because they are over the cap. But hey could move a defenceman and get under as well.
-Proposal: Go to hell, Heatley. How about Chris Campoli for a 3rd round pick? If Gillis ever signed Mike Comrie I'd probably poison my own drink.
-Over the cap with holes to fill. They need to cut back on expensive forwards (Briere).
-Proposal: A few intriguing d-men in Philly. Rich Parent, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle. The Flyers have to flog Daniel Briere first methinks. Good luck on that.
-Have plenty of money to sign free agents like Scottie Upshall and Nigel Dawes.
-Proposal: Any takers on UFA's Ken Klee or Dimitri Kalinin? I'd take Klee as a depth D guy.
-Need defencemen and a backup goalie and are very close to the cap max.
-Proposal: None. Satan, Sykora and Zigomanis are all UFA's. No bloody thank you. Send them to Europe.
-Plenty of forwards to re-sign, a backup goalie, and too many defencemen.
-Proposal: Perfect trading partners! Mason Raymond for Brad Lukowich or Mark-Edouard Vlasic?
-Too many forwards and not enough defencemen means not good trading partners
-Unless you think Marek Malik or Noah Welch are good UFA signings, there really is nothing here.
-Here's my fave trading partner. The Leafs need a bit of help up front and have a shitload of defencemen.
-Proposal: Michael Grabner or Mason Raymond for Ian White. I'm a big fan of Ian White.
-So much negotiating in Washington that needs to get done and not enough d-men that I would want.
So ther you have it. 3 hours of my life that I can't have back. I'm curious about your insights. Maybe I missed something. Maybe I'm full of shit. Feel free to voice your opinion, because face it... it is fair to say that Gillis is going thrift shopping over the next several weeks.

I would love Coburn or Carle from Philly…San Jose D-men are also a nice option, although probably less likely than a trade with an eastern team. I would prefer to hold onto Raymond as I think he is still destined for a breakout season – and I would prefer that happening as a Canuck.
Unfortunately, I am aware of how good White is as the bloody Leafs are shoved down my throat here in Northwestern Ontario. The thought of Gillis making a deal with that raging alcoholic in T.O. and his bad comb-over might be a little much for me to deal with at the moment.
Nice post, by the way!

I had to kill 3 hours in a lousy hotel. Thanks.
I used Raymond as an example because I’m not sure what other guy we should part with. Jannick Hansen isn’t going to get much return. I want to see Grabner play at the NHL level. Who knows what Gillis is thinking of moving.

I want to see Grabner play at the NHL level as well, but I also want to watch Raymond progress in his development as a Canuck. He seems to be a good learner and he made advances in a some areas (including PK) during the course of last season. I see great upside for him if he gets regular shifts.

I fell in love with Raymond over the course of the playoffs. He may not be consistent, but he will definitely be a valuable game changer on a championship team.

Got too trade assets to gain assets. That’s the name of the game. What would you have us trade then?
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 8, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We don’t have many other assets do we? Pat White? Schroeder? You’re right. Give some to gain some. Wherever the needs are.

Is his bad comb-over named Dave Nonis?
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 8, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You could take Wade Redden
He is really good, so good that we almost cant keep him so many teams want him. Hop on this deal NOW!

Of those
Two targets look good to me (in trades, at least): Campoli and Smid. Edmonton is clearly interested in moving Smid, and Ottawa’s got a bit of a clusterfuck going on, and from chaos comes opportunity. Besides, I liked Campoli on Long Island: he handled himself well, and has good offensive instincts. Not much in salary would be going back, what with the cap problems, but a draft pick next year wouldn’t be missed…

Perhaps we can manufacture a not-so-evil clone of Bieksa or a cyborg Salo?
Nah, fuck it…Bieksa is hilarious when he’s pissed off and we couldn’t afford that many spare parts for Sami.
by nelboski on Jul 8, 2009 10:55 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I heard that Jack Johnson is looking for $5 million a year, so F that.
Like Thursday, I like Campoli and Smid as well. Vlasic, Coburn, and Carle are also guys I like.
Give up something like Raymond or Hansen and a 2nd round pick.
by cyxj on Jul 8, 2009 11:30 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
We have no 2nd round pick for 2010 due to the Bernier deal. And I think 2nd rounders are useful to hold on to for rfa offer sheet purposes, so I don’t think we should be trading the 2011 one either.

Ian White for Raymond? NEVER!!!! That would go down as one of the worst trades in history. Strahlman for a pick makes more sense.
White sucks, he’s slow, non-physical and unskilled. The only reason that he has a job is cause he grew a mustache and became the “mustache” guy in the league.

George Parros is the mustache guy in my books.

True, I guess its another thing which White isn’t good at…

Ian White
I could see that trade happening. I’ve had this feeling for a while that Nonis is still high on Grabner and that somehow he’ll end up in Toronto. I’d want something like a 4th round draft pick included too.

Gillis called the cupboard bare a few years back. I don’t think he’s gonna trade any young skilled goal-scorers anywhere. Especially for a crappy defenceman like White…
by Nuckels on Jul 8, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I keep reading that Gillis isn’t high on Grabner so he’s not likely to get a shot with the Canucks. You don’t think White is good enough to get Grabner + a low draft pick, we’ll be generous and throw in Stajan too, to fill your 3rd line center needs!

I do NOT like the idea of giving up on a potential 40 goal man. Yes, I’m serious. Nieuwendyk pushed Dallas over the top, winning them the cup; it only cost them Iginla to do it.
by Thursday on Jul 9, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So Grabner could turn into Iginla after we trade him, but if we do trade him away, we win the Stanley Cup? SIGN ME UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’d trade away a thousand Jerome Iginla’s to win that god damn cup. I’d trade my own mother (her NHL rights, that is) to win that cup.

Because what issues has Dallas had since, anyway?

The Hawks have signed a Bryan Bickell, now. I can only imagine that they’re using food stamps and Canadian Tire money.

AS for what the Habs have… the reality is all the big guns (minus Tanguay) have been had.
Lang is another interesting guy, lot of offensive upside, though returning from an Achillies injury may take some time.
Frank Boullion is a steady D. He gives 110 percent, but has had injury hampered seasons of late. Again not in the Habs plans as they reshuffled other teams tossers and sewed together a team for at least this year.
Rumor has it after the Mara and Moen signings today there’s a three way deal in the works. At this point I have no idea what Einstein Gainey has in store for us. But unless its Vinny, I don’t know how this is all going to play out.
As for hating the Habs.. its ok …. we realize you’re jealous and don’t take you serious!! LOL
