We have our backup
And guess what! He's a former Leaf. It's Andrew Raycroft. We do love their garbage.
I'm thinking this is a clear step down from Barby, who played well for us in his limited role last year. I guess Barbs just wanted too much money, or he wanted assurances of more starts. Because I have no confidence is this new guy, and I'm thinking this signing says two things. One, the talk about giving Lu less starts this year is hogwash. Lu will be in for 70 games minimum barring injury (oh please god no!). Two, this solidifies that Schneids will be dealt. The only theory under which he could have been kept would be as a backup role that gets real minutes in order to rest Lu (say 20-25 starts) and also to showcase his NHL abilities to up his value. The question is when does the deal happen. I'm hoping soon so we get more stuff to talk about.

And look at his stats. Gawdawful. A rising player who had one great breakout season and that got destroyed by the post-lockout “new NHL”. And he sucks.

LaBarbera wanted more starts, and he wasn’t going to get them behind Lui. I’d actually have been quite happy with Sanford, even for a bit more money: the most important attribute for a back-up goalie is his character in the room, and Sanford’s reputation was excellent in that regard.
That being said…
I’m really, really hoping Raycroft has signed a one-year deal because he is determined to win back his reputation as a potential starter in the league. Or at least as an NHL-calibre goalie.
I’m just going to suggest that Tom Benjamin is right.
Razor is so bad that he’ll pass waivers every time Schneider is called up as a backup.
That depends on whether or not he progresses here and if another team has serious goalie injury issues
