Wanna Hate A Sedin Or Two?
Or Gaborik or Hossa? How about CC Sabathia or Manny Ramirez? Have at it, I'm too busy sobbing.

Manny makes my income in two/thirds of a single game. Fuck me.

Daniel Sedin could pay my tuition in .58 games. Or Manny in .29. Damn. It’s gonna take me like 5 years!

I need some feedback
The above thread re employment and finances brings up a question I’d like to ask you folks:
Have any of you tried the corned beef sandwich (possibly sold as a Reuben) at GM Place during this past Canuck season?
I make it.
GM Place took it on to replace the corned beef they had been using because of its superior quality and taste, although it’s alot more expensive than what they had been using.
If anybody out there has tried it this past year, I would be very appreciative of your opinion.
Thanks.
Wow. Random. Are you being serious? I’ve tried the beer. It’s good. Not the Reuben sandwiches though, sorry.

Very serious. This is my livelihood…….and we’re exceedingly proud of our product and feel it’s the best, at least on the West Coast.

I’d really like to have one, like right now actually. But I’m afraid I haven’t had one either.

Suddenly
I have a strange hankering for a corned beef sandwich.
And a beer.
I’m gonna try me that combo next time I watch a game.
Hey, y’all, thanks for the replies. If the current recession doesn’t cause GM Place to discontinue using our corned beef, and it’s sold there this coming hockey season, try it, you’ll LOVE it!

Oh... My... GOD!
You make Rubens there? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a good one on the west coast?!?! Never mind, of course you do. I have to buy the bits and pieces and put them together myself (damn not having a Jewish ghetto in Vancouver!)

Sorry. Just have to collect myself a little… Let me get this right: do you make the rubens, or just the beef? Because you’re at the mercy of others when you only produce one portion of it.
Very briefly
We’re originally from Brooklyn, where, in our neighborhood there was a kosher deli on just about every street corner, selling sumptuous corned beef. Out here we never found any which compared to our childhood corned beef. So, being cooks, we decided to make our own. We actually brine the raw briskets in barrels for 2 weeks, unheard of in this era of injecting an instant cure with needles, and after curing for 2 weeks, the briskets are slow cooked/steamed, and then go to a number of hotels, restaurants and Irish pubs, and GM Place. The finished product resembles Montreal smoked meat in its “dark” flavor, but is actually corned (or brined) rather than smoked.
Enough said, I don’t like “advertising” my product, but since a portion of you attend Canucks games, I thought I’d fish for some reviews.

Lastly, we only make the corned beef. We actually prefer a simple corned beef on rye with mustard to a Reuben, as the sauerkraut, cheese and Dijon of a Reuben tend to mask the unique flavor of our corned beef. Too bad that restaurant chefs and the public at large are conditioned to only considering corned beef as part of a Reuben. Too bad.
And I think “Zack And Miri Make A Porno” is a great movie on a number of levels and director Kevin Smith is a genius.

If you’re looking for the best options for jewish deli food in Vancouver, may I suggest try the hot montreal smoked meat sandwiches at Siegel’s Bagels on Cornwall, just off the Burrard Bridge. I haven’t tried the sandwiches at GM Place, so I’ll give them a shot next time

They fly the meat in weekly from Montreal.

Last I had
…was some salted beef at a groovy little beigel (yeah, that’s how it’s spelled there) shop in London. Perfect for 0230, but otherwise, nothing special. Is there anywhere I can get some of this good stuff that isn’t already with something else? Some way I can drag it home with me?
For this, I can take an overnighter!
Well, now that you mention it, we are at the day tables at Granville Island Public Market once a month, Fri Sat and Sun. We were there this past weekend and the next time will be Aug 14, 15 and 16. Look for New York Corned Beef Connection. The day (temporary) tables. You can also visit our “factory” at Cultus Lake plaza any Fri Sat or Sun all year long.

Scary thing is...
Teams/owners make a huge profit off of these players. In terms of production, they’re not getting what they’re worth.
I’d love to see a pie chart of salaries in comparison to overall team revenue generated per year across all the big sport leagues.

I’m betting that hockey has the highest salary to revenue ratio. It has the least revenue of the big 4, and it’s salary cap is about the same as the NBA’s (although there are more loopholes in the NBA version). Anyway, it would make sense that players get more of the pie in hockey, because it’s a struggling sport, and teams that don’t perform in the US lose a lot of revenue because people just ignore the sport altogether (see: Chicago until 2 years ago). So there is a much higher incentive to spend the extra bucks on players, compared to a sport like football, where fans will show up no matter what, so you’ll make money whether or not you spend.

True; and there is also a development system in the NHL, unlike any other league I know of. Heck, there’s two stages below NHL level with direct affiliations for the majority (all?) of NHL teams, and that’s gotta cost, too.
The NHL is the most gate-driven sport of the Big Four, so much so you’ll find owners using gate-only numbers to show how much money they’ve “lost” to better their leases/tax payments in many cities.
Actually baseball has a three-tier development system – A, AA, AAA. They’re the inventors of the minor league scheme.

Baseball has many many tiers. Even more than the ones you listed.

You are correct, sir! I clearly fell asleep during… well, every baseball game I’ve ever tried watching. Thanks for catching it!
Me too. Fuck that sport. Contact baseball on the other hand would be a great idea.

You shouldn't use the salary cap for reference
The CBA is very clear about the ratio of salary to revenue, and it’s fixed regardless of how many stupid contracts the teams have offered. It’s at 57% with the current level of revenue. Even if every team spends to the cap, it has to be 57% and the adjustment will come off of the player’s paycheques, turning a $4-million salary on paper into $3-million in reality, for example.
Koufax/Drysdale
Gone are the days. There was a time when Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, two enormously gifted, and legendary pitchers, refused to start the season unless they were each paid $100,000 per season. Imagine that. But, at the same time, an O’Henry bar cost 10cents back then.
And the really should have added Gary Bettman
He’s made more than the Sedin’s new contract last yeart
But he’s proven to be worth every cent. Go ask a Red Wings fan.
