Kaberle To Vancouver: What If?
Mr. Inaccurate is saying that a Canucks deal with the Leafs for Kaberle is "very close". Yeah yeah, lay off on the "but it's Eklund thing" because I get that. But hypothetically what would you think of Tomas Kaberle in a Canucks uni? What would you be willing to trade to get him?

Not for Schneider, no. Burke should just hang on to him and pitch him at the deadline when GM’s are more panicked.
Gillis should elsewhere. At this point he’s not replacing Ohlund, but he can certainly find someone better than Rome and Funk.

I don’t think Burke will have that much interest in Schneider now that he’s bagged the “monster”

Yeah, but he could move Toskala too. Regardless. The Twitter talk on this trade is hilarious, already tossing Burrows or Kesler and a pick for Kaberle. I’m not suggesting either Bur or Kes is legendary or anything, but they mean too much to this edition of the team to move.
God I hate the summer.

Toskala is making $4 mill in his final year of his contract. Kaberle is making $4.25 for 2 more years. That’s too much payroll to take on for Vancouver. Individually though, Kaberle’s contract is cheap like Dutch.
I don’t know if the Leafs really need another goalie. They need help up front. So I could see a Wellwood-Raymond-draft pick for Kaberle kind of deal, as an example.
You think they want Welly back after they waived him? That would be funny. I’m betting a deal would be two of Raymond, Grabner, Hansen, plus a draft pick (higher if hansen is one of the two).

I would Pay
Grabner + Raymond + 3rd Round Pick. May be a bit steep by some of you, but I think to get Kaberle would be huge for the nucks
So basically you agree with what I think it will cost. But I’m not sure if I’m for it. My worry is that we’ve got so few prospects to trade, that we can basically only get one legit player in return for the next 2 years without mortgaging our entire future. So is Kaberle the one we want to be it? I’m not sure.

I’m 50/50 on that proposal. Love to have a QB superstar in Kaberle but like Beantown said, in 2 years Kaberle would walk and get $7 million somewhere else.

Not Grabner
Someone who can carry the puck out is needed, sure: but pure goal scorers are a rare thing. Yes, I’m thinking of potential rather than proven talent, but tell me someone here who wouldn’t be pissed off to have lost a 40-goal scorer (that’s the potential) for a two-year rental?
Let’s not forget how many (or rather how few) games Kaberle played last year: 25 games were lost with an injured right hand, and got a total of 0 points in the seven games he came back for after he “recovered” (the first time, back in February). Yep, zero points.
What say we see if that hand is fully recovered before handing him the reins, shall we? I wouldn’t mind getting him, don’t get me wrong; but he’s going to come with one hell of a caveat until I see him in some game action.
I’m going to predict this later on as well, but Kaberle may not be needed because with Bieksa and Edler being handed the reins (potentially) I think they may score closer to 50 points each. If that’s the case, we need a lower-caliber defenceman
We need someone who can hit players like Toews/Kane, not get beat by them (with all due respect to Ohlund). Offense would be nice too, but I’m more concerned about the defensive aspects, that should be the higher priority in my books. I don’t think that’s Kaberle. But if that’s not available for whatever reason, Kaberle still makes for a great addition.

humm
I think we will do “ok” with what we have if we have to. I am a big Grabner fan, and don’t want to give him up, but somehow I think we need something else on the back end.
Would you rather lose Grabner or a first round pick (assuming you’d think Kabele is worth either of them)?

For sure a 1st round pick if we could let get him for that. Grabner being a first round pick himself I think is really starting to come around. It would be great if a deal like that could be done, but I couldn’t see the leafs doing that, would they?
1st, 3rd and Raymond?
For whatever reason I’d be nervous about losing Grabner until we see him at the NHL level and this year (plus Demitra’s trips to the IR) there’s a great chance.
I’d lose the pick, even though I like what Gillis is doing at the past two drafts.

Up until the MG era, I would have said “who cares” about first round picks. (see Patrick White). But now… I dunno… Hodson and Schroeder are looking good where I sit. Give up a first round is giving up a chance to get another one of them. I would very much like to see Gillis draft a Hodgson-esque steal of pick next year who’s a defenceman.
But like the old refrain goes, you gotta give up something to gain something. The assets that other teams are going to like from the Canucks are the same ones that I like. It’s a painful call to make. I wish MG luck!
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 19, 2009 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions
Picks can be re-acquired later on through trades as well if MG pisses one or two away now.
I’ve watched Kaberle for a long time. He racks up points. But I still think that torch has been passed on to Bieksa and Edler.
It looks to me like with MG getting Aaron Rome and Nolan Baumgartner means that he may be content with his top 4 guys. I’m beginning to lean that way.

I don’t get where your optimism about the D comes from, ye of normally heavy skeptism. Do you not remember how Chicago’s speed owned us?
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 19, 2009 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions
I think so, too. Speed is less important during the power play (in a D-man, any way), but I still want to see someone who can carry the puck past the forecheck and out.
Heck, I wouldn’t mind Coulombe getting another shot at the bigs. 12 minutes a game, and a total change-up for the opposition. All that, and he was a +20 for Victoria last season, so he may have hit by the “drop passes are bad” stick enough for the message to sink in. Plus, he’s going to come at a bargain rate and with a two-way contract.
This year?
A first rounder, no question. Weak draft year, and everyone knows it, so I don’t think that would be enough (there have got to be bigger offers than that out there now).
Also, I remember Burke rattling off about “having three strong offers” during the draft, and they went up in smoke. That injury history may have dropped the price more than he’d like, so there won’t be a move until the season starts…
Mr. Inaccurate is now suggesting a more ludicrous scenario whereby the Maple Losers acquire Kessel from Boston and then trade both K’s (Kessel and Kaberle) to Vancouver for “something big” in return." That scares me because we don’t really have anything big to offer that I would think we should be willing to offer. Or it would scare me if it was on a legitimate website.

Both! Haha! No way in hell we give up all that to get both Kessel AND Kaberle. Eklund is a turd.

Eklund is the hockey equivalent of the National Enquirer. Basically, he reports bullshit rumours to stir the pot, and then pretends to scoop some major news from time to time usually 5 minutes after TSN has already reported it. Yet we all read him a bit to see what the latest crap he comes up with is.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 20, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions
He runs www.hockeybuzz.com, for what its worth. Some of the bloggers on their do have some interesting things to say, just all the ‘scoop’ that comes from the big E himself is about as useful as the hypotheticals we discuss here, only he claims them to be legit.

Wysh wrote the best piece on the Fraud I’ve read. But Beantown is right: his only value is he’s hired decent MSM guys to blog on his site for him. Why and how I have no idea. But bottom line is there are far more reputable sites out there for actual news. If you just want to throw shit against the wall and see what shape you make, you have his site.
