Talks Underway Between Gillis and Sedins

"You never know until they're actually signed and you get down to the nitty-gritty of these things, but often times there's a long pre-amble to getting right down to where the most you can spend and what they're willing to accept, and we're confident we can get to that point pretty shortly here."

They've indicated to me everytime I've spoken to them that they like it here, their children were born here, they like the way they've been treated, they like the direction we're trying to go with this team, and they've both told me they think this was the best team they've played on in their pro careers.  So those are all pretty positive factors."

Personally, I get the feeling that a deal will be done. I also think that the Twins may just sign for a little less than $7 million. It's just a matter of time now before we know the deal. Once the Sedins sign (or don't) the rest of the dominoes will fall into place (Wellwood, O'Brien, Pyatt, etc. )

More Gillis yapping with the Team 1040 here.

Yes, please!
It would rub all the wrong ways if the twins went elsewhere.

If the Sedins sign for a hometown discount, it would be the best damn assist they’ve given the Canucks. I’ve always cheered them on (Hank more so, oddly), but no way in hell are they worth $7 million a piece. If they don’t budge from that salary, walk away.
If they do sign I hope the Nucks take the example of present Wings or old Avs
teams and stick Grabner/Hodgson with Dan and Hank so they find their feet quicker
in the big leagues, even if its just secondary assists.
Colorado years ago used to take the rookie likes of Drury/Hejduk
and stick them with Sakic or Forsberg to bring their confidence up.
Look at the recent late-season surge of Stamkos when he was paired with St.Louis for another successful example, instead of Mullet Melrose jerking him around the lineup.

Good points. Unfortunately, not everyone gels with the Twins.

7 Million?

I love the Sedins and want them back? But what about cap issues bringing in more players. For more scoring, cause we all know we need more fire power. This team was a great look at what could be better for further playoff pushes. But we need a little more and need to get deeper depth. So with that in mind…

What are your thoughts of the possibly rumors concerning:

Hossa? Pure scoring
Heatley? I’d love him in a NUCKS jersey.
Sundin? Cheap old timer discount for experience in the room
JayBo?
Lecavalier? This might be a stretch

I know some of those are trades? But these guys maybe in play?

I feel after fridays game. I’m really excited by the fact that there is money to be opened up to get some high caliber players.

I may be a dreamer, but a crazy fool for the Canucks. Long live the Killer Whale!

You can’t underestimate the Twins when they consistently put up over 80 points per year. You can’t just go out and get that in free agency in the summer without paying a high price….unless you acquire a sleeper. Not worth the risk. I believe the Canucks would still have a fair bit of payroll even if the Sedins signed for $6.5 each.
Lecavalier? Would be great but would cost us the farm.
I hate Hossa.
Heatley would cost us the farm too.
Like I said earlier, Gillis needs to stock up the farm, not piss it away, That’s something the Leafs do.

Hossa: Nope.

Sundin: Did. Not. Take. As for his experience, Canucks are full up on
‘memorable playoff flameouts’.
(“Did I ever tell you about the time I lost to the Devils…again!”)

JayBo: Talented, might be snakebit. Kinda maybe?

Lecavalier: Bum shoulder, but why not?
Coach V could tell him all about this thing called ‘defense’.
Vinny seems due for a renaissance. That and the playoffs.

Heatley: Only after Heatley imbibes memory drugs to wipe out the car crash, the car crash that was Ottawa’s SCF against the Ducks and anything Spezza has ever told him.
It just seems like hanging out with Spezza will make you dumber by osmosis.

To Zarnstrom and Yank Canuck: An old co-worker of mine who’s buddies with some of the Sens confirmed Spezza is essentially retarded, and not in a good ’lets party!" way.
Hockey is full of dunderheads but Spezza is a whole new breed of mongrel.
The interviews with him confirm it.
From now on Jason, I dub thee “Cletus”!

5.5 or walk away Gillis.
The Sedins are smart kinds, they love the city, and I am sure that they’d rather see the Canucks stay competitive than cripple their own team. To make up some, Gillis could throw in some bonus incentive if they goo deep into the playoffs.

by Fan from L.A. on Jun 11, 2009 3:09 PM PDT reply actions

Bonus if they go deep in the playoffs? The Sedins delivered a point per game in the playoffs this year. The defence took a huge dump.
I’m still thinking $6-6.5 is fair, or wise.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 11, 2009 3:30 PM PDT reply actions

think there’s any chance we can get them for less than 6 over a long-term deal?

by passive_voice on Jun 12, 2009 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably not, but that doesn’t mean Gillis won’t try. After Burrows’ and Kesler’s comments about taking less to help the team, who knows? You know teams are playing up the “The cap will be far less in two years” theme, but we’ll just have to see if players believe them or not.

I’m hoping $6m/five years; fearing 7/two; thinking 6.5/four. There may be a bonus situation added in, but if so Gillis should definitely go the Devils route: the only bonuses are team performance bonuses, period.

by Thursday on Jun 12, 2009 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

absolutely.

The Sedins and their agent told a Swedish newspaper a month back that they want market value. Of course, that could just be posturing. There is no way in hell they settle for >6. If they do, I’ll go to Vancouver personally and kiss them both…in a manly kind of way.
