Bears 5 Moose 4 - Overtime Final: Period By Period

PERIOD 1

Did you know: The Hershey Bears have won nine Calder Cups and own a 70-year history in the AHL. Hershey has been to the Calder in three of the last four years alone. When it comes to tradition, in this league at least, the Bears are boss. - LINK

-The Bears have taken 3 consecutive penalties. The 3rd one gave Manitoba a 5 on 3 and Mark Cullen roofs the puck after taking a cross ice pass from Jason Krog. Michael Grabner also gets an assist.

-Moments later Alexandre Giroux advantage of a sloppy Moose defensive play to tie it at one. A shorthanded goal. Ouch. That's Giroux's 10th assisted by Keith Aucoin. Those 2 are in the top 3 playoff scoring for the Bears.

-The Bears had momentum after the shorty goal when all of a sudden Cody Hodgson passes the puck to a speeding Grabner going up the left side. Grabner blew by the defender and went in alone and scored. A beauty! 2-1 Moose.

-The Moose have all the momentum as the period ends. Entertaining as hell. The Moose are attacking heavily. When the Bears came on earlier, Cory Schneider made a few awesome saves there.

Shots after 1: Moose 10 Bears 10

PERIOD 2

-The Moose are dominating over the first 5:00. Lo and behold Grabner streaks up the left side again and buries a beauty backhander over Bears goalie Neuvirth for his 2nd goal of the game. Wow. Assisted by Dustin Collins. That pass almost didn't make it to Grabner. Did I tell you that Grabner has wheels? Holy hell.

-That was a tighter period with both teams settling down defensively. Late in the period the Bears killed off a 2 man advantage.

- Cory Schneider has been terrific. He made several more glorious saves throughout that period to keep the Moose up by 2.

-James Pope had a penalty shot in that period but was stopped by Neuvirth.

Shots in the 2nd Period: Moose 7 Bears 6.

PERIOD 3

-The Bears applied pressure (naturally) to start the 3rd and 2:34 in, Oskar Osala scores to pull the Bears to within 1 goal. Can the Moose hold on?

-Manitoba's powerplay efficiency has dropped off. The crowd at the MTC Center was actually booing the efforts. That would have been a good chance to bury the Bears, but the best chance they had was by Grabner, who was stoned by Neuvirth.

-Yep, and moments later Mark Fistric takes a needless penalty and Claude Giroux wastes no time scoring on the PP to tie the game. 3-3.

-Oskar Osala has scored his 2nd goal of the game, catching Schneider napping. He shot it from the goal line and Schneider didn't have the post covered. Under 4:00 to go and it's 4-3 Bears now.

-The Bears then get into huge penalty trouble. A 4:00 double minor to Tyler Sloan and then a delay of game by Staffan Kronwall. The Moose take little time capitalizing on it. Maxime Fortunus blasts a shot by Neuvirth about 1:00 later. 4-4!  Assists to Krog and Cullen.

-The Moose remained on the PP to end the 3rd and did everything but score the winner. Damn, this is going to OT.

Shots in the 3rd: Moose 12 Bears 11. It was 11-4 Bears at one point, but that changed when they took all those penalties.

OVERTIME

-Can you believe the Bears gave the Moose 10 powerplay chances in this game? The Moose capitalized on 2 of them. The OT is quite a chippy affair, with the Bears getting the better chances. Once again Cory Schneider is making sick save after save.

-Speaking of penalties, Nolan Baumgartner took a highsticking penalty in the 2nd half of OT and who else but Alex Giroux finds a loose puck and scores the winner. Remember, the AHL has a 2-3-2 playoff format. The Moose really have to win the next game before hitting the road for 3 games.

Shots in OT: Bears 8 Moose 1.

Overall: Bears 35 Moose 30

Next game is on Tuesday night.

I’m getting my time zones screwed up. The game starts at 7:30 Central Time. That would make it 5:30 Pacific Time. Damn. That’s an hour away still.

Man it sucks there’s no free online version of the game. I’d rather watch the Moose then the Cup finals. So screw it…I’m all about Matt Cooke tonight but you best keep this bad boy updated when the game starts!

An aside: you know what’s sad? I remember exactly what I was doing last year for game one of the SCF…I went on a date to a yankees game (they got killed) and then to a BBQ dinner then to a bar to watch the game. And now? I went to a mets game (they got killed) and waiting on a BBQ dinner to watch the game. Bloody hell!

Yankees and Met suck. I go for the beer and the eye talent. Also the new stadiums for both are pretty sweet.

After the tragic 9 game losing streak for the Jays

which included a sweep at the hands of Jason Bay and the 24 douchebags, it was nice to see the Jays get some revenge today.

Jays are gonna sweep tomorrow!

by Sean Zandberg on May 30, 2009 6:11 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t know. He’s in the right place at the right time usually and has a great shot. He doesn’t have the flair of a Grabner though

by Sean Zandberg on May 30, 2009 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

More Flair For Vancouver! WOOOO.

Oooh that line sounds awesome. How much did it cost to get AHL TV?

by Alix on May 30, 2009 6:14 PM PDT reply actions

I paid $50 for the whole series. It would be $10 per game but I said piss on it.

by Sean Zandberg on May 30, 2009 6:18 PM PDT reply actions

I mean there is an option to pay per game or for the whole series

by Sean Zandberg on May 30, 2009 6:21 PM PDT reply actions

Oh per game? Cool. I might do that. Thanks Zan!

by Alix on May 30, 2009 6:30 PM PDT reply actions
