Quiz And A Query
Note: As mentioned earlier we'll be running these posts about once a week over the cruel, hockey-less summer months. The quiz tests your Vancouver Canucks knowledge while the query allows you to be Monday Morning GM.
Play to win (nothing really, it's pride people). Attempt to not cheat unless you start putting a gun to your head...then by all means cheat.
***************
Question #1: There's only been one trade in Canucks history that was ever nullified*. Name the Canuck player who management attempted to move and the reason it was nullified.
* - That I'm aware of. If I'm wrong, chuck a brick at my head in the comments.
Query #1: In 2003 the Canucks selected Ohio State University's Ryan Kesler with their first round pick, 23rd overall. The following list shows the 2008 production of the ten players selected behind Kesler (picks 23-33):
Other notables behind Kesler include Patrice Bergeron (45th), Dan Fritsche (46th), Matt Carle (47th), Shea Weber (49th), Patrick O'Sullivan (56th) and David Backes (62nd).
So Mr. or Ms. GM, weighing not just stats but also what the player means to their respective team, would you still have taken Kesler with the first round pick?

Imagine Perry with the Sedins.
Yeah.

Or Richards? Yikes.

Richards or Perry would have been great pick-ups, but I truly dig Kesler. I believe he has the best wheels of the three and will put up some killer numbers in the 09/10 season now that he’s playing as a top 6 forward.
I agree with your optimism. But he’s got some stiff company in that draft class. Just knowing Richards was a pick behind him is so tempting.
Career numbers for both:
Kesler: 320GP, 65G, 75A, 140pts
Richards: 290GP, 79G, 142A, 221 pts.
71 point different in only 30 games says a lot, both about the strength of Richards linemates as well as his overall skill. Richards is already a captain, Kesler I think will be one day. Both are up for the Selke.
Like I said, very tempting…

What the Canucks needed
Perry’s a monster (286 GP, 91 G, 195 pts, 322 PIM), and possibly who I’d go for over Kesler. That being said, Kesler was groomed for a different role than anyone else on this list: he was tagged as a defencive forward/penalty killer for his first two and a half seasons, where Richards was dropped onto an offensive line at the start.
Kesler brings speed and drive to a team that needed both, and he’s got the will to do anything asked of him. He’s a shut-down guy the other team has to check, which can drive line-matching coaches off the deep end. I really do think he was the best choice for Vancouver, but I’d pick Perry close behind and Richards right after him.
But Loui Eriksson may be the best goal scorer of the lot when all is said and done, so if you think the leadership on Vancouver is fine, then that may be your choice.
Yeah I’ve been ignoring Eriksson too but he’s not a bad choice either. You’re right, probably the best pure goal scorer that far into the draft.

I hate to say it but Richards > Kesler EASILY.
I’d say Perry is about equal with Kesler. Perry has better finish and a bit more size/grit, whereas Kesler has better wheels and 2-way play.
I don’t wanna start an argument about this, but I’d rather draft the Canadian kid too. They generally want it more.
Perry is a darned good penalty killer himself and the reason, I think, he’s not seen as being a better 2 way player is simply because that’s not his role.

Richards vs Kesler is a tough one. If there was a player I would have taken though, its Shea Weber. Big, fast, tough, skilled and a team guy. Norris trophy winner one day and our mainstay D-man to Canadian gold in 2010.
Perry is okay, he’s got great numbers cause of Getslaf though, so I would take Kesler over that punk over and over.
You know what’s more annoying? In the same round of 2003, the Ducks picked Getzlaf 19th and Perry at 28th…two killer picks within ten slots of each other. Fuckers.

And a couple years later they got Bobby Ryan late in the game as well. Damn ducks.

Yeah I don’t want to pop the answer just yet. I’ll give a hint though: he was in the news this week and his name appears SOMEWHERE on this page.

Peter Zezel. I don’t know why (or who he is for that matter), but he fits the qualification of being in the news this week and being on this page.

Peter Zezel
Peter Zezel… all to do with that whole Brian Burke trading him away from a sick family member or something so he retired from the NHL, thus voiding the deal..
T. Haynes gets it. Rollonubears was right too but Haynes had the reason why. Well done.

Who to draft?
I’d take Richards or Perry no doubt, but I’m extremely happy with Kesler so far.
Perry is a better goal scorer than Eriksson… no doubt!
I’ll do an easier question next week maybe. That one was pretty tough if you didn’t remember the dark Keenan years.

I can only remember the good things Keenan did…like bringing in Messier.
haha…relax

Keenan is a douched. But he did get us Bert, and Bert did turn into Luongo. Just throwing some thoughts out there.

Next Year:
I’d love to see the Nucks go up against the Caps,
Ovechkin vs. Kesler/Luongo vs.Varlamov would be a blast.
I’d also pay to see Cheli’s Chili Bar burn down.
And Adam Burnish get rejected for a mortgage.
And Pronger slowly being devoured by a giant Galapagos Turtle.
I need a drink.
I've hummed the "Indiana Jones" theme song after sex.
My gal hates this. Does that count as a signature?
I’m all for physical pain to Pronger and Burish. And Chelios. And the entire Calgary and Rangers organization.
Perhaps I have anger issues…

I can’t hate Chelios. He called out the refs after their bullshit in last year’s finals and he beat up the turtling Larry Murphy in the 1992 Finals. He’s cool in my books.
