The Last Time the Canucks Got Past Round 2

It's been 15 years since the Canucks beat the Stars in 5 games in Round 2 of the 1994 Playoffs. I can't say that I remember much of that series except for the one thing that most longtime Canucks fans remember: The Bure elbow on Shane Churla. I believe he was only fined $500 and given a game suspension by then-NHL disciplinarian Brian Burke. Bure also scored more goals than any other Canuck in that series. Sergio Momesso worked his way out of Pat Quinn's doghouse by scoring a winning goal as well.

That infamous elbow and the physicality of that series is captured on the clip below, an excerpt from Don Cherry's Rock 'Em Sock 'Em 6.

Can you remember anything else about that series?

There is a game-by-game recap of that series here.

i don’t remember 1994. i was only 4 years old at the time.

you know how those rotten flamers like chanting "fuck the canucks" because it rhymes?
well, it just so happens that "fuck the flames" uses alliteration, for which more superior intellect is required compared to rhyme.
fuck the flames, and GO CANUCKS GO!

Well you missed out big time, missy! That was the best Finals ever. Kirk McLean’s heroics in Game 1, Bure’s penalty shot, the rally from the 3-1 deficit, the goal post, I could go on. What a series.

I think I was alive for that finals, but I would have only been a month old at most.

I'm old enough to understand. Jerks.

Have you ever watched tapes of those games? If you haven’t then you MUST

No I have not.

Wow. Get someone to burn them for you, somehow. You gotta see it!
I still have the extended highlights and all of Game 7 on VHS. Gotta convert it over.

You people are making me feel old. Unacceptable. Excuse me while I go run in traffic with a kite.

OMG…you are all babies! My daughter was 6!!

Love how Grapes called Pavel – Pavelle. Whats up with that?

He REALLY hated Russians back then

Oh yes….I am old too then. I still talk about the 3 OTs (1 double OT) in the first round to come from behind and beat Calgary. I barely passed my provincials. It was magical. So for anyone who is not too familiar with this huge part of history….pls read….1) http://www3.telus.net/dmarchak/cancla94.htm and 2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Eastern_Conference_Finals. It was an epic run.

That Bure hit on Churla is sick…

The little guy finally had enough!

That’s probably the nicest you’d ever hear Don Cherry talk about an elbow from a Russian. If it wasn’t on his precious DVD, he’d be making xenophobic remarks about Bure for about 10 minutes while Ron MacLean stared awkwardly into the camera.

Ron is/was way too politically correct to let Grapes run his mouth for too long.

by Sean Zandberg on Apr 28, 2009 7:24 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, he probably had/has one of the toughest jobs in the world.
