Rangers sit Avery and get blown out 4-0 in Game 5
I'm just going to throw something out there.
I know Avery has no points in the series against the Capitals and is a -1. He took 2 late penaties in game 4 and nearly gave coach Torterella a hernia. So Torts sits Avery in Game 5 and the Rangers lose 4-0. Is there a coincidence there? Let me toss a couple of stats your way:
-In 23 games prior to Avery's return to Broadway, the Rangers had only won 8 games out of 23.
-After they acquired Avery they won 11 of 18 games to end the season. Toss in the playoffs and they won 14 of 22 games.
How much of Avery's presence contributed to that?
Or do we give the credit to Nik Antropov?
I know everybody hates the guy, and rightfully so, but he does provide the agitation and grit that the Rangers lack.
Just sayin'.
By the way, Aaron Voros, who replaced the scratched Avery tonight, ended up a -2 and took 12 minutes in penalties.
Huh...

I can’t explain Avery’s presence with the Rangers other than it seems to work.

One helper today, but a -2 and no time in the box. He looked tentative. If I was Torts, I’d just unleash him in the first period of game seven. Just go for it. Their team badly needs a spark of some sort.
