Who is the bigger "homer" announcer?
As a Leaf Fan in Vancouver (cough), I'm forever defending all things Leaf related from my Toronto-hating coworkers, friends, family, pastor, rabbi and social worker(s). Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Jim Hughson's vocal stylings are seemingly despised by the Leaf faithful as much as the venerable Bob Cole's are by folks out west!
There is only one way to settle this once and for all, a poll pitting the Leaf Nation against the Canuckleheads! Feel free to cheat as much as a habs fan in the voting!
Comparing the Combatants
Bob Cole
Pros
- That silky, silky voice
- Is a newfie so has "spirit"
Cons
- Easily confused, angered by action on the ice
- Occasionally wanders off from the booth at inopportune times
Jim Hughson
Pros
- Can liven up even the most boring game due to experience calling Baseball, Canucks games
- Has the ability to fill in for the colour guy for anything not related to the goaltender due to experience with John Garrett
Cons
- Doesn't even bother changing his catchphrase "GREAT SAVE LUONGO!" to fit the team(s) currently on the ice
- Is new and different and hockey fans fear change.

Yeah, I grew up being a Leafs junky from 1977 to 2006. I endured years of bashing!
I like both announcers. Bob Cole is a legend and I can’t diss the guy at all. He’s just getting old is all! And he is miles ahead of Harry Neale!

I like em both too. I even like Neale for colour, he has some hilarious quips from time to time too. Much better than Millen!
Simpson is a good colour guy too, I enjoy the pairing of him and Hughson quite a bit..

Simpson has a great hockey mind with all that coaching experience he had. Millen is a fucking pompous idiot!

Something about his voice and the stress in it.. Can’t stand it!
Also, is there anything funnier than seeing Kirk McLean do spots on CBC? I don’t know why, but I find him hilarious. Unintentionally so, he has such a deer-in-the-headlights look to him. I think they put him next to Cassie to make her look more professional. Although she’s come a long way in a short time I must say.

did you notice that she added a hyphen and name to her name? No longer just Cassie Campbell…

Is she married to Tony Granato? I’m not even going to google search it.
Kirk McLean does have that look to him doesn’t he? Ah, I still like him.

Yeah I like Kirk too, he’s earnest and tries hard.
I’m surprised Cliff Ronning never got into the broadcasting biz. I was at a restaurant in Burnaby a couple years back and he was having a retirement dinner with a couple friends and wives and I overheard him mention he was wanting to get into broadcasting, and he said “why should goalies get all the fun” or something to that effect. I was considering congratulating him for his career but it was a swanky restaurant and I didn’t want to intrude.

Also I think you’re thinking of Cammi Granato, who is Tony’s younger sister. She’s married to Ray Ferraro.

Granato and Ferraro. Yes that’s it.
I never intrude on celebrities either, BTW.

Cole may be forgetting players names/not even bothering to learn any other than the Leafs but Hughson’s got to take this.
