Canucks And Raymond Rolling Now After Squashing Flames 5-1
First of all: A goal that will be shown forever, and one that Kiprusoff will never forget.
More after the jump...
Mason Raymond scored 2 goals in the span of 34 seconds late in period one, and then scored the Canucks' next goal 12:31 into the 2nd period to get earn the first hat trick of his career. He now has 17 goals and 29 points in 39 games. He has 12 points in his last 9 games. Think this guy wants a raise?
What a game! Lots of physicality, a bed-wetting by the Flames, Canucks getting scoring from 3 different lines..Kyle Wellwood of all people scored the winning goal as the Flames refused to play a solid defensive game.
Welcome to 7th spot in the West, Vancouver! These guys look terrifically poised right now. They just stole 4 points from 2 Albertan teams.
Even though the Sedins were dominant they only managed a point each. Darcy Hordichuk played the role of pest tonight, completely getting under Brian McGratton's skin and causing him to take penalties. He was rewarded with just under 10:00 of ice time. Well done, Hordichuk.
A few other stats that stand out:
-10 Canuck players registered at least a point.
-Willie Mitchell was awesome tonight. 22:37 played, 1 assist, 1 goal saving play and a +3.
-Tanner Glass and Kevin Bieksa both fought, where Hordichuk and Rick Rypien did not. Huh.
-Kevin Bieksa's ice time is still low, playing only 16:39 tonight. He looked pretty good fighting Eric Nystrom. I didn't see him make many mistakes. He finished a +1.
-Phaneuf, Regehr, Langkow and Bourque...all -2 tonight.
I did not foresee Miikka Kiprusoff getting pulled. I didn't foresee the Flames showing such little emotion either. The Canucks on the other hand have silenced their critics for the time being.
1. Great win over Edmonton after the Xmas layoff.
2. Great win over an Oiler team that is last in the West
3. Great win over a Flames team that was well-rested, 1 point above them in the standings, and the 2nd game for Vancouver in as many nights
The next game against Phoenix will be a lot tougher I assure you.
MY 3 STARS
1. Mason Raymond
2. Roberto Luongo. That point-blank glove save was sick.
3. Willie Mitchell

The shot of Sutter is priceless. He’s a sullen looking fellow to begin with, but after that goal, he was grinding his teeth, ready to eat someone alive. Kiprusoff was like “Get me out of here”.
In the battle of the strong, victory goes to the brave.
Could he look anymore deadly than that? If killing was legal he would have strangled McGratton then and every time that idiot took a penalty

This Bieksa ripping is gettin out of hand. A few media threw out his name after a couple subpar outings, and now he’s gettin praised if he gets the puck out of his own zone.
Bieksa plays best when he’s on the edge, and while he has room to improve, he’s not playin nearly as badly as people think.
Don’t believe the hype.
I tend to believe what I see. I’ve watched almost all the games this year and lately he hasn’t been performing to his potential. That David Backes goal where he just lets him get by is pretty weak. He’s done that a few times. I’m sure he’ll pick it up but he better start doing it soon.
As far as I’ve seen of the last 2 games he has started doing it already, especially Flames game when he did some really good things and looked really together.

I missed the second half of the game, sounded like fun. Will catch what I can from the highlights.
The Lames looked like us when we have a long lay-off, haha.
They are taking it pretty hard in Cowtown — Iginla stating they are embarrassed by that game and the Calgary Herald blogger contemplating blowing up the Flames
Thanks for the link. I needed to laugh even more than I already have tonight!

Also at Matchsticks and Gasolene many are complaining that the refs (from BC) are being biased and calling all penalties against the Flames, when in fact the Canucks are clearly “diving,” which, apparently they always do.
Kinda hard to blame refs when your team doesn’t even show up in the first place!

Hordichuck showed some amazing self-control. Being hit from behind, and punched, he was laughing as the penalized player was sent to the Box.

I thought Hordichuk played his best game so far AttilaS…he drew three penalties, was effective most of the time he was on the ice, and stood up to McGratten to make him realize, along with Glass, Bieksa and others, that this Canucks team does have enough toughness. The Flamers tried a couple times to play the goon game and had it shoved back at them each time.
Besides, I have always thought the Flames’ supposed toughness was a little overrated.
There seems to be more guys on our team that can play that way then theirs now.
BTW…was that shift where Henrik scored great or what. Phaneuf comes in high on Hank, knocks him down. Hank goes back it him, then goes to the corner and helps his bro’ get the puck and eventually does score…
and then talk some smack with Dionne afterwards. To the affect of…“it didn’t hurt, you are a dick, and look at the scoreboard chump!”
Seems these are not your father’s Sedins either!
The earliest use of the word with the spelling we recognize today is found in "L'Acadie: or Seven Years' Exploration in British America" by James Edward Alexander, published in 1849:
We also met a lusty fellow in a forest road with a keg of whisky slung round him who called to us 'Come boys and have some grog, I'm what you call a canuck"
Seems these are not your father’s Sedins either!
And that’s a good thing, because for so many years I didn’t think they’d be able to handle getting shoved around. Now they dish it out, take it, and go back into the dirty areas and score. These guys are awesome!
The unique advantage of the Sedin bros. versus the other NHL stars is that they feed off each-other’s energy. One of them may have a tough day, but the other brother can quckly pull him out of his funk. So, as whole, they are more than the sum of the individuals.
If they stick around the HNL for a long time, I think they may become the most consistent goal scorers in the history of this league.
