Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Sweden released its Olympic roster today. Of course the Sedins are on the team, however neither Mikael Samuelsson nor Alex Edler made the cut. I figured Samuelsson was iffy, but I am really surprised that Edler did not make it. He has 8 goals and 12 assists in 34 games, good for second amongst Swedish blueliners. Maybe they figure they need defensive rocks, not offensive rockets, on the blueline. Your thoughts?
Edit: Samuelsson's reaction to being snubbed: "Probably going to get in trouble for this, but they can go fuck themselves."

Honestly, I am surprised to see Tallinder there instead of Edler.

Yeah I’m really surprised by this. I wonder if this will light a fire under Sammuelson’s belly or make him even more lost out there? And sucks for Edler. Really sucks for him. I think he’s currently as good as pretty much every d-man that made the team other than lidstrom.

Floored, on both accounts

Modin over Sammuelsson? Really?

Tallinder or Johannsen over Edler?

by Jevant on Dec 27, 2009 2:08 PM PST reply actions

Ditto, more so on Edler.

Oh well, it’ll theoretically be easier for Team Canada to win gold!

M'eh

two less Canucks to worry about getting injured at the Olympics.

by Temujin on Dec 27, 2009 2:37 PM PST reply actions

Sammuelsson is SO streaky. If he’s going well, he’s a world beater. If not, he’s pretty pedestrian.

Edler did struggle at the start of the year though he’s been better lately. Looks like the Swedes are emphasizing a shut down D, over an offensive, puck moving D. The player who surprises me is Ohlund. I guess they want experience and the ability to throw a big hit, but his best days are in the distant past. Canada should take note of when he’s on the ice as a good chance to torch em.

by ThomasPratt on Dec 27, 2009 2:49 PM PST reply actions

Ehh, he’ll probably play vs. Iginla and shut him down!

There are some injuries so they may still see action at the Olympics but still kind of surprising that Edler didn’t make it.

If Edler was playing right now the way he was last year they would have taken him. Truth is..Edler hasn’t been that consistent yet.

by Sean Zandberg on Dec 27, 2009 6:52 PM PST reply actions

Got Ehrhoff’s stats mixed up with Edler’s up there. Same number of points, but less goals.

by vanbure on Dec 27, 2009 8:13 PM PST reply actions

You’re right. Sorry ‘bout that – they’re right next to each other in the d-man scoring leaders, so I got ’em mixed up.

So Dan Murphy tweeted that Samuelsson said: “I’ll probably regret saying this, but they can go fuck themselves.”

Zing!

That is amazing and he is now becoming one of my favourite canucks again. Just like that. That sweet pass to MayRay helped the cause too.

He’s not even near one my faves. Way too inconsistent. He could have played better over the last month or so to maybe make the Swede squad, but he has been way too inconsistent and invisible too much of the time.

Inconsistent or not, telling an olympic organization to go fuck themselves is tops in my book. I just had a man crush and his name is mikael.

sammy was holding his tongue to the Swedish media the day before. Then 24 hours later he loses it! The anger festered inside of him.
Has anyone ever gone on record and said “go fuck yourself?” This is classic stuff.
Sammy was telling the Swede papers that he wasn’t sure if he’d even play for Sweden if injuries happened. Of course, we know he doesn’t mean that.

The Swedish team management was surprised by Sammy’s comments but are not adding any fuel to the fire. If anything, they like Samuelsson’s passion to play for Sweden.

Not taking Samuelsson is a mistake, in my books

BUT, if we now get pissed off Samuelsson for the rest of the year, I’m good with that too.

by Jevant on Dec 28, 2009 7:00 AM PST reply actions

Yeah, I mean, I thought he played one of his best games in quite a while last night. He was feisty too. Right Bouwmeester?
