My Vancouver spies insist that Trevor Linden will play a significant role of some kind in the flame lead-up at the 2010 opening ceremony and I sure hope that’s not true. Linden’s presence does not resonate outside Vancouver and if he’s significant in this, it will make the organizing committee look small and all too local. This is a world, international event, not a celebration of the rather inept history of the Canucks.
Steve Simmons via Kuklas Korner.
Thank goodness this clown has spies; I would hate to think he did his own thorough investigative journalism.
And did this blowhard call out Li Ning during the summer Olympics opening ceremony too? Fairly certainly he wasn't a household name worldwide either.
It's the host city's choice, deal with it.

If the Olympics were in Toronto and Doug Gilmour or Wendal Clark was part of the ceremony, there would be no bitching from the Toronto sports media.

That wasn’t necessary, Steve. That’s not even the whole reason why Linden is celebrated here.
Ugh. Hey Mike, you mind if I post a rebuttal piece?

What is this, i don’t even…
Too small and too local? Isn’t part of the idea behind the Olympics to showcase local culture?
"But there is going to be that seventh game. We'll hope they can patch Linden up and get him in that one. He will play, you know he'll play! He'd play on crutches! He will play, and he'll play at Madison Square Gardens on Tuesday night!" - Jim Robson
This is dickishly written, and we need a lot more information. I think it’s a great idea to give Trevor Linden a role in the ceremony. However, if that role eclipses Wayne Gretzky’s role, I think that’s a mistake. He’s the obvious choice to represent Canada as a host nation in a winter sports showcase. No question in my mind.

Simmons
He is an idiot…His column in the Sunday Sun is consistently one of the most uninformed bias filled pieces in the Media…he seems to make facts up to support his own agendas every week and enjoys taking unneccesary jabs at topics he clearly knows nothing about…but I guess you cant blame the guy for this take on the sporting world as, all he has to write about out here is a bunch of losing franchises
Here’s my comment I posted at Kuklas Korner earlier tonight:
“What an idiot. Why should he care if Linden is involved in some of the ceremonies. If Dougie Gilmore was involved, this guy would be pissing his pants in anticipation.
The Olympics are in Vancouver, and if they pick some athletes who have been highly involved in the city’s sports history (and the Canucks’ dismall overall record has no bearing, this is the Olympics), then why not. A significant part of the audience will be from BC, why shouldn’t they pick someone who would popular with them. "
Couldn’t agree more, spot on.

Thanks bud…is it just in the ROC that we think Steve is a tool, or is he laughed out of the sports bar in T.O too?
The earliest use of the word with the spelling we recognize today is found in "L'Acadie: or Seven Years' Exploration in British America" by James Edward Alexander, published in 1849:
We also met a lusty fellow in a forest road with a keg of whisky slung round him who called to us 'Come boys and have some grog, I'm what you call a canuck"
