What's The Time? It's Time To Buy Ale! Canucks-Oilers Game Thread
Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks, Nov 28, 2009 7:00 PM PST
Canucks gotta take this one. They are better than Edmonton in almost every area. They are catching up to Colorado in the Northwest for that 2nd spot behind the Flames. Can't be losing games like this, especially not with San Jose knocking on our door and kicking it in on Sunday.
Since I like to make a music reference in the Game Threads, tonight my influence and admiration turns to rap. No, not that modern garbage that just won't go away. I kick it old school: Run DMC, Schoolly D, Public Enemy, and my faves..the Beastie Boys.
The Tune: Hold It Now, Hit It by the Beastie Boys.
Now I chill real ill when I start to chill
When I fill my pockets with a knot of dollar bills
Sipping pints of ale out the window sill
When I get my fill I'm chilly chill
Now I just got home because I'm out on bail
What's the time? - it's time to buy ale
Peter eater - parking meter all of the time
If I run out of ale - it's time to buy wine
Miller drinking - chicken eating - dress so fly
I got friends in high places that are keeping me high
Dow with Mike D. and it ain't no hassle
Got the ladies of the eighties from here to White Castle

Burr’ said it exactly right. get them the puck, take your check to the net…let the scoring begin.

Mo
got a bad rap like some others at the end in Van, but he’s a good two-way guy that will score key goals and can skate, pass, check very well. Not a first liner as they tried to make him here, but a good 2nd line, great 3rd.
Agreed. His jump is back and he’s been very defensively responsible and more slippery in the offensive zone than I remembered. He’s also extremely dangerous when he gets a hold of a neutral zone turnover.

Not particularly, but it’s nowhere near as bad as the haters will have you believe. He’s a hard guy to evaluate defensively because his whole approach is so non-traditional.

That's the myth
He doesn’t need to be “forgiven” for his D. He makes some bad plays because a) he stays out on shifts way too long so he gets caught gassed a lot (and I put a lot of that responsibility on the coach) and b) he makes defensive plays with his skates, not his stick or shoulders like we’re used to seeing. He just flies to loose pucks and swoops them up and is gone. Normally D have to get there, win a battle and clear the puck. That’s what we identify as “great defense.” When there is no “play” because a guy just snatches the puck and is gone it doesn’t register as a great defensive play to a casual eye.

Yeah he is, but I distrust that stat. The Verizon Center stat keeper is ridiculous with his giveaways so Green’s numbers are going to be higher than they should be. But even adjusted it looks bad. I think that’s more of a factor of having the puck so much though, and not as much about him always making bad decisions. He does make bad decisions but most of the giveaways are in the offensive zone when he’s trying to force an offensive play. I hope he can work that out of his system with age and maturity.

I kind've
suspected that was the case, his +/- was way too good last year for him to have been too much of a liability.
Exactly. People try to use this ridiculous argument that all his points come on the PP so he’s really not that good 5 on 5, but ignore the +/-, which is obviously not benefited from his PP production. He’s got some work to do but if you ever hear someone say he should be a winger, do me a favor and slap them.

From what I’ve seen this year, his D is still pretty bad.
Which is why I think he won’t make Team Canada.
So who you got ahead of him?
(And his D was never “pretty bad.” He was always above average defensively. Check Mirtle, or Japers’ Rink, or Alan Ryder’s work and you’ll quickly be dispelled of that myth.)

I’d say it’s hard to put Doughty ahead of him right now, but I am a huge Doughty fan. I also think J-Bo is ridiculously overrated so I’m not really sold on him making the team. Seabrook maybe, if he keeps up real strong play and Green doesn’t turn his game around. At least you didn’t say Phaneuf.

I doubt J-Bo will be there, but he’s been serviceable for Canada in the past which is why I threw him out there.
Having Keith-Seabrook paired up may be best because of their already existing chemistry.
I’m not an idiot (re: Phaneuf). :)
It will be real interesting to see how Team Canada weighs chemistry and past international experience. Marleau doesn’t have a lot of past international experience but has the chemistry with Heatley and Thornton. I’d say he has to be on there but there are a ton of candidates. Shane Doan seems like he’s always on Team Canada, but he’s definitely not one of the 12 most skilled Canadian forwards.

I think (as of last time I checked) that his numbas are pretty ugly (or at least worse than LY) so far?
That said, he’s a total HPilf and every team would love to have him. What’s his work ethic like? Clearly with his offensive talent he’s got the potential for a shitload of Norris.
by Passive Voice on Nov 28, 2009 8:38 PM PST up reply actions
Definitely worse than last year. May even be ugly, I haven’t looked at them this year. But the Caps in general have been a bit of a disappointment so far. I’m hoping he rounds back into form down the stretch and into the playoffs.
He almost won the Norris last year, and he should get better. I don’t think it was a fluke. I have no idea if he’ll ever reach it but he reminds me of Scott Niedermayer with better scoring ability. Scary stuff.
Not entirely convinced on his work ethic. You hear some people say he worked real hard this summer but he seems to enjoy some of the uh, finer things in life, and he had a weight gain issue last year. It’s too early (for me) to say anything conclusive about his work ethic, and he’s still just a punk kid.

Yeah, Green
He was real out of shape by the end of this year. He lost a ton of shape this summer and was supposedly in great shape again. Hard to tell if he’s out of shape or just on the ice way too much. He’s not a guy like Pronger that can play huge minutes and manage his shifts and be economic with his movements. He’s high energy and skates a ton every shift so it takes a lot out of him. He’s usually playing 27-30 and I’d much prefer him come down to 24-26 for a regular season game. Again, that’s on the coach though. How many NHL players won’t take as much ice as they are offered?

I forget what his comp looked like last year. This year he’s been pretty good and recently moved to the top pair with Green (a tough job for anyone). He’s bulked up and is more assertive with the body. He’s not a hitting machine but he takes ice away better than he was before. He’s looking more confident and calm out there, which is to be expected. He’s still very young and growing into his body and figuring out how to be effective in the NHL with his long reach and slow feet. Another work in progress that is playing some solid hockey for us.

that’s roughly the impression I have of him from across the continent. and I was in his corner for the Norris last year; I think Mirtle did a post about his season and concluded it was one of the 5 (or something) most impressive seasons, offensively, ever for a d-man.
by Passive Voice on Nov 28, 2009 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

After the way our PP has been of late, I’ll be happy to have him back for that unit alone
I lived with a blind guy for a while, then he figured it out and demanded back rent.

He won’t fix the problem with the PP. PP needs to stop dicking around on the perimeter and get shots and crash the net. Semin won’t help that.

F&B..what do you think about putting Laich on the PP while Knuble is injured for net presence?

I’d like him on PP2. But I’d like BB to sue PP2. I think Fehr earned the spot to crash the net on PP1.

Well, Canes lost 5-1 to Buffalo, and they are pretty good this year, but yeah…they seem to suck way more than you would think, even without Ward and Staal…

Staal is back. And they gave up 5 third period goals in consecutive games. Total meltdown. And they can’t fire their coach because they are still paying the last one. I love it.

So will he get cheered or booed in the Olympics
I love that guy. He was interviewed the other day and he was talking like he isn’t a lock for the team. He better be, and with Burke running it I assume he is.

He’s a lock. No worries there. I think he’ll get booed playing Canada, and cheered for his usual hard working plays against the other countries…

Will there actually be any real fans in the stands for those Olympic games? Or just dignitaries and corporate schmoozers?

The Gold medal tickets, and any tickets with Canadxa on the ticket for games are pretty sought after. I think there will be more than enough “real” fans in the stands…

they’d better be prepared for more fight from them for sure.
But I like how there’s a lot of Nucks that needed to are playing so much better lately.
Edler, 3 points tonight for 6 in his last 5, +4 over that same span.
Burr + 5 with 5 points in his last 5.
Raymond with 8 points in his last 6 games
Burnier 5 and +5 in his last 5.
Mitchell +5 in his last 5.
Good night all
Thanks for the invite, missy. Thanks for the hospitality and hockey talk folks. See you around.
