"Errorhoff" No More
Ehrhoff-mania is running wild in Vancouver and for Canucks fans all over the globe. He's been training, saying his prayers and eating his vitamins. And what'cha gonna do opposing teams? What'cha gonna when the magic hands of Christian destroy you, brothers?
Missy mentioned in the comments section of the post below that we need to dub Christian with a new nickname. Affectionately dubbed "Errorhoff" by Sharks fans in the past, we just aren't seeing many errors from our +/- leader (no one's even close to his +11) and highest scoring defenceman.
So, let's put this baby to bed, so to speak. Thanks to Yoata for getting this ball rolling in the Game Thread last night.

Any Bobby Orr related nicknames are blasphemy. I mean honestly. The greatest ever player in hockey history being compared to a decent number 3 German D man? Yeah. And I am Jesus.

Haha! Yeah, I hear ya. But you’re not Jesus. I am.

Last night it should have been Pairhoff, as in a pairhoff goals.
Sorry if anyone already threw that out there in last night’s comments, which I have only skimmed. Seemed like yoata was on an Ehrhoff-esque roll with the nicknames!

Yeah I’ve definitely taken a liking to Ehrhoff pretty much since he got here. Errorhoff was an excellent nick because it blended with his name so well, but he definitely deserves something a bit more accurate.
I’m glad to see we are getting rid of “Error”! I might start calling him Hasselhoff, although Blastoff is pretty cool too. Go go you magical german!

So can we just add “hoff” to the end of everyone’s name?

Actually, I fricking laughed at both your lists!
Just add “arr” to the end of all their names and you’ve got a team of Pirates.

I voted “other” and prefer just The Hoff as well.

You bet. I have yet to see one beat that yet. I’m liking The Hoff and Orrhoff too.

I’m perfectly content with Errorhoff, considering that it’s fair to say the Sharks may have made an error in letting him go. Also why jinx a perfectly good nickname, start naming him something else and we’ll probably have to go back to Error soon enough.

Well Section, I was the kid at 6 in all Boston gear and a #4, and I don’t mind the comparison. I wasn’t the only one, Cheech on the broadcast was another that thought that was an Orr like rush on the shot he rang off the post.
I like how Luongo called him Bobbyoff and then waiting for the reaction from the media pack…
So far so good. His +/- may suffer overall, but I’ll take that for the positives of having an offensively gifted guy that likes making the jump up.
He already has shown to be smarter at doing it and getting back than the other candidate on the team …Bieksa.
I do like Blastoff too, but I voted for Bobbyoff, just because that was given by a teammate…

Airhawk
back when he played for the sharks i mistakenly thought that his name was Airhawk and thought it was awesome and have always called him that since

Airhawk sounds like the name of a really cool 80s TV show.

I can totally picture ‘Airhawk’ with aviator sunglasses, a ponytail, and a purple blazer (heavy on the shoulder pads)

Hey Sean…I asked yesterday, maybe I’ll try again now.
In the “Wizard” prognostications, I think we should give the bonus point for shutouts as well as the GWG…yes/no?

Section…a really cool 80s Sat. morning cartoon.
Airhawk battles to save the world against a nefarious cabal with Indian Heads on their chests.( or whomever the next opponent is..)
Like it though…kind of a play on the name…and it still sounds good…
Beanie…you see the Dolph Lungren type? I was thinking more Kurt Russell in Soldier, old model thrown aside that still kicks the new model’s ass.

Reality check ...
We’re all happy with Ehrhoff, and he had a good game last night. So I know I’ll get heck for saying this, but could we have a bit of a reality check? Yes, he’s +11, but he also plays sheltered minutes. He’s not up against the opposition’s best. That’d be Mitchell and Salo, who are doing most of the heavy lifting defensively, as per quality of competition:
And AV isn’t exactly throwing him out in defensive zone face-offs—it’s Mitchell and Salo who take more d-zone face-offs proportionally:
PK doesn’t affect +/-, but it is telling that, although Ehrhoff is middle of the pack in terms of penalty killing time, he’s sent out against the oppositions least effective:
http://www.behindthenet.ca/2009/new_4_on_5.php?sort=8§ion=&mingp=&mintoi=&team=VAN&pos=D
Over and over, it’s Willie Mitchell whose doing a lot of the hard work on D.
AV is keeping Ehrhoff away from tough situations. Which is good, it’s good coaching, and Ehrhoff is delivering offensively, which is what he is supposed to do.
I just don’t think we’re anywhere near a Bobby Orr. And I’m guessing that “Errorhoff” might come back to bit us in the ass at some point. Maybe Willie is the guy we should be heroizing with new nicknames. Unspectacular but rock solid.

interesting analysis.
however, he just scored 2 goals in a single game, and he’s 7th in the league for defencemen for both goals and points, so let him have a little glory.

As it should be
MItchell is a defensive specialist, Erhoff an offense first guy.
And I think we’re all just having a bit of fun here, I certainly am, nobody in their right mind is calling the guy even a Norris candidate at this point let alone in any way comparable to Orr, it’s laughs, relax.

My god, I must be high.
Yoata just said the entire response that I would say to that, almost word for word.
Scary shit. I expect to see the famine, pestilence and other signs of the Apocalypse shortly.
I will add that a good coach does exactly what you said antro, knows his player’s strengths and sets his lineup accordingly.
And that his plus 11, regardless of what line it is out against, is indicative of making the smart play more often than not.
Carry on!

Orrhoff's +/-
looks especially good when you consider only 4 of his points have come at even strength.
He’s got as many takeaways as Mitchell, though more giveaways, but has significant hits, blocked shots and shooting percentage. He’s on the 2nd ES pairing, first PP unit, 2nd PK unit, he’s playing a very good all around game and if he keeps it up he should see even more icetime in all areas.
Can’t blame the guy if he prefers to possess the puck rather than check the guy that possesses the puck!

Saying all that
is Orrhoff really being sheltered? Can’t see it.
by yoata on Nov 21, 2009 10:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Neither can I. The guy stands out wherever he is on the ice, and he’s on it often. He sometimes lives up to the Error nickname but more often than not I see him doing good, if not spectacular, stuff.

Hey Antro: I appreciate your balanced input, make no mistake. Yeah, this Orrhoff thing is just so damned fun right now. After all the injuries…and then to kick Colorado’s ass like that AGAIN…yeah…Christian is a hero right now and it’s a blast!

Thats what I am saying too Bobby…guys like Ehrhoff and other offensive D’men are going to get caught occasionally. Ehrhoff will too…its just a numbers thing. Its not going to work EVERY time.
I am really liking his instincts on the pinch and knowing when to jump up and when to back off.
So far so good…and hey, we can always trade later for Rahimi or White if they turn out to be any good.

Guess I was in the minority with Luongo’s suggestion.
I do like Blastoff too. That shot sure makes it a worthy nom de guierre ( is that right…H/S French was a long time ago!)
Though the way he toyed with the Avs players on Bernier’s nice tip was pretty Bobby-ish, as was the end to end that ended up hitting the post.
Actually…Orr would have scored that one!

Agreed…
Too lazy to go get the link, but McIntyre in the Sun was right about how we haven’t had that “explosive” offensive D man since Jovo…
And the ’Hoff has proven to be smarter than Jovo was about when to jump.
Blastoff, and Orrhoff when he pulls one of those rushes…has to do that more than a few times to earn the #4.

Sharks fan here. Good to see Ehrhoff put in a role where he can succeed! No doubt the Sharks have rushed a few of their defenseman (see also: Carle, Matt) but also they just didn’t put them in optimal situations. Keep Ehrhoff away from the Getzlafs and Iginlas of the world, and let him dangle through some 3rd line forward and flat footed bottom pairing dman and it is fun to watch. Bernier seems to be working out pretty well in Vancouver, too.
One question, is Ehrhoff getting his shots on net? Another nickname for him while in SJ was Christian “just wide” Ehrhoff for his propensity to never get that blast of a shot on target. Has he smartly went back to his half windup for the sake of accuracy?
by ruben398 on Nov 23, 2009 11:06 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Blastoff does still miss the net a lot, yes. As far as the windup goes…you may be right about that, but don’t quote me.

It’s gotta be Blasthoff or Airhawk. I’m leaning towards Airhawk just for the originality and awesomeness it implies. Most of my own nicknames for hockey players don’t make much sense either.
