Dean Arsene called up
Ok so I know this is a Canucks blog so posting about an Oiler getting called up probably is against some sort of rule. Maybe I am risking my involvement in this blog by posting this but I don't care. Dean Arsene just got called up by the Oilers. After 109 games in the ECHL and over 300 games, 500 including playoffs, in the AHL Arsene has been called up to the NHL. He could make his debut tomorrow against Atlanta.
Now other than the obvious fact that this is a cool story about a 29 year old who has slogged it out in the minors for close to a decade this is a really cool story for me because Dean Arsene was one of my best friends groing up. I haven't seen much of him since he moved away to go play for the Regina Pats but when we were younger we were pretty close. He used to shoot pucks at me in his drive way. Well not pucks, but tennis balls or something.
Anyway, even though I haven't seen him in years and we aren't good friends anymore, I am still super excited to see him make his NHL debut. I will be, for one night at most, an Oilers fan on Sunday.

Hey that’s pretty cool. I feel like being Canadian, it’s pretty easy to know somebody who knows somebody, so now you’re one of those somebodies. I’m always a bit disappointed when I think about the minor league players I used to look up to who went on to junior try outs, only made it as far as the BCHL.
Apparently my friend knows Sam Ganger somehow. So I guess we know each other through 3 people, haha. Also, check out Arsene’s grin on that roster photo.
It’s like that game ’ 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon.’ I’m sure most of us have an even shorter connection to someone in the NHL, due to Canada’s small population.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
I actually know a guy who played at Bowling Green with Bieksa. Maybe for hockey players it should be ‘6 Degrees of Kevin Bieksa’

No he didn’t play Sunday. Luckily I found out in time to cancel Oilers PPV. Phew that would have sucked. He was cover for Souray and Souray was able to go. But he did play last night. 9 shifts, 6 and a half minutes of ice time. No mistakes apparently. Imagine 9 years in the minors and Pat Quinn tells you that you are in the lineup. He must have freaked out. Hopefully he plays again Wednesday.

Yeah I know it isn’t ideal. He is from Langley, well Aldergrove I guess. Technically I think he is from Bradner area of Abby but anyway I am hoping to get a chance to see him play against the Heat in Abby there will be a big Arsene fan club there that night. Hope he gets to go tonight on National TV.
If you are interested you can check out the preview of tonight’s Oil game on NHL.com. If you can stomach it there is some audio of Deaner that is pretty good. http://oilers.nhl.com/club/podcastplayer.htm?pid=98&iid=17115
