Off With Their Heads! Canucks-Kings Game Thread
Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings, Oct 29, 2009 7:30 PM PDT
Without getting too much into depth here: This is going to be a great test for the Canucks. The Kings are rolling for several reasons: Anze Kopitar (leading the NHL with 21 points) and crew are scoring in bunches, the additions of vets Ryan Smyth and Rob Scuderi, and goaltending from Jonathan Quick. Gone are the fruitless rebuilding days with their 5-tier goalie system of recent past. For now, anyway.
The Kings took the Sharks to the shootout last night and lost. That's an impressive feat. That also means the Canucks should try get an early jump on them because they might be a little pooped out.
I just wanna throw a few stats out there for you to both instill panic and comfort all at once.
-The Kings are 5th in the NHL in goals for. The Canucks are 18th.
-The allow 3 goals per game on average, ranking them 16th. The Canucks are 10th.
-The Kings' PP is ranked 9th at 23.1% efficiency. The Canucks are 3rd at 29.1%.
-LA doesn't kill penalties very well: 73.1% ranking them 26th; Canucks rank 16th at 78%.
-The Canucks shoot more and allow less shots against per game.
-The Kings suck in the faceoff circle: 47.5% wins to rank them 26th; the Canucks much better at 51.3% ranking them 7th overall.
Check out a great post at the Fanhouse about the chemistry between Kopitar and Smyth.
To the tune: The Razor's Edge by AC/DC
There's Anze on the left
And Smitty on the right
Shoot the puck all they want
They're going down tonight
I believe the Canucks can win this. Do it boys!

Not to be pessimistic, but accord to the Canucks website:
“In five career appearances against the Kings, Raycroft has posted a 1-3-0 record with a 4.93 GAA and a .852 save percentage.”
Not sure how that adds up to five appearances (pulled once?), but I’m hoping that those stats were thanks to having shitty teams in front of him.
Try average out his last 3 games against them…it’s like a 6.86 I think

Yup, he was either pulled from the game or, what is more likely, came on in substitution when the winning goal had already been scored and would thus not be the goalie of record.
As an aside, I hate to be a grammar Nazi, but in the original post it reads “less shots per game.” It is “fewer”, not less. If it’s countable it’s fewer, if it’s not countable it’s less. The Canucks have fewer wins than the Kings, which might be because the Kings have suffered fewer man-games lost injury. That doesn’t mean the Canucks have any less passion or motivation to get the job done tonight.
Let's do this!

Can’t bring myself to order the ppv. We seem to play terribly every time I do. No radio in the place either, so I’ll have to get my updates from here.

eh….I hate watching or listening when I know there’s a delay. At least here, I can just casually drift in and out.

Son of Sam’s shot selection isn’t always the best. I hate it when he (or anyone else) fires them off shin pads.
yeah…but then he scores a zinger and I forgive him every time

So far Raycroft has been alright— a couple challenging saves. But I don’t feel confident with his shaky positioning and rebound control.
How could you tell that his positioning was shaky?

When that early-game pass out front happened, he was pratically having tea and crumpets with the guy behind the net :P

Just got home and started watching
A few questions:
1. How have we looked?
2. Anything/anyone notable I should know about?
3. How is Raycroft doing? (15/16 saves looks pretty decent)
4. What is the best joke so far re: Missy studying to be a barista?
Re: #4
Ha, I was thinking the same thing today. Though if my Grade 5 math is still holding up I believe it’s a pentagon not a pentagram?

Any word on D Sedin yet? He’s been gone for over 3 weeks and it was originally 4-6 weeks. Technically he should be ready soon.
I’ve only watched a bit of the 3rd, but i’m startin to get a little alarmed. We are 12 games in and i’ve only seen the Nucks dominate a handful of games.
Its obviously foolish to judge tonights game, but I have a feeling that we’ve been hangin on again.
Isn’t that fucked?
And watch Son of Sam score the OT winner. Then I’ll give Casual his Lotto #’s

I should move to LA
$21 for a Kings ticket, hot dog and soda? SOLD! Throw in a beer per period and you’re looking at $50 or so (less than a GM Place ticket) for a good night!

Okay, maybe unfair after seeing the replay
It was Grabner, and actually he walked a tightrope between holding him up and taking a hooking penalty

Raycroft
Has actually IMRPOVED his stats! Came in with a 1.14 GAA, and his GAA for the game is 1.00!
guess he wanted to take away some "grabbiness" from him

Another example
of AV’s complete lack of offensive sense.
Mason-no-finish- Raymond 2nd choice in the shootout?
Wow
Only saw less than half the game, but it didn’t look pretty. But I am not going to complain and will take the 2 points!
The Kings did have 31 shots…but a lot was from the point and from the outside.
Good defensive line there with Rome etc until Kopitar had a few rushes in the 3rd.
Fuck, another injury though..Murphy said it was a shoulder on the post game.
So..Desbiens? Bliznak? Who’s left in Manitoba?
vancitydan
Hordi can get his spot back it seems… And wellwood and hansen should be back soon.
