Off With Their Heads! Canucks-Kings Game Thread

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings, Oct 29, 2009 7:30 PM PDT

Next Game

Without getting too much into depth here: This is going to be a great test for the Canucks. The Kings are rolling for several reasons: Anze Kopitar (leading the NHL with 21 points) and crew are scoring in bunches, the additions of vets Ryan Smyth and Rob Scuderi, and goaltending from Jonathan Quick. Gone are the fruitless rebuilding days with their 5-tier goalie system of recent past. For now, anyway.

The Kings took the Sharks to the shootout last night and lost. That's an impressive feat. That also means the Canucks should try get an early jump on them because they might be a little pooped out.

I just wanna throw a few stats out there for you to both instill panic and comfort all at once.

-The Kings are 5th in the NHL in goals for. The Canucks are 18th.

-The allow 3 goals per game on average, ranking them 16th. The Canucks are 10th.

-The Kings' PP is ranked 9th at 23.1% efficiency. The Canucks are 3rd at 29.1%.

-LA doesn't kill penalties very well: 73.1% ranking them 26th; Canucks rank 16th at 78%.

-The Canucks shoot more and allow less shots against per game.

-The Kings suck in the faceoff circle: 47.5% wins to rank them 26th; the Canucks much better at 51.3% ranking them 7th overall.

Check out a great post at the Fanhouse about the chemistry between Kopitar and Smyth.

Not to be pessimistic, but accord to the Canucks website:

“In five career appearances against the Kings, Raycroft has posted a 1-3-0 record with a 4.93 GAA and a .852 save percentage.”

Not sure how that adds up to five appearances (pulled once?), but I’m hoping that those stats were thanks to having shitty teams in front of him.

Try average out his last 3 games against them…it’s like a 6.86 I think

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup, he was either pulled from the game or, what is more likely, came on in substitution when the winning goal had already been scored and would thus not be the goalie of record.

As an aside, I hate to be a grammar Nazi, but in the original post it reads “less shots per game.” It is “fewer”, not less. If it’s countable it’s fewer, if it’s not countable it’s less. The Canucks have fewer wins than the Kings, which might be because the Kings have suffered fewer man-games lost injury. That doesn’t mean the Canucks have any less passion or motivation to get the job done tonight.

Pathetic. No support for Rayzor. We better win this.
OR: We’re playing too defensive

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

Who plays in net vs the Ducks tomorrow? Shorty/Garrett are saying Razer should get it.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

Another Bieksa pinch fail.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 9:45 PM PDT reply actions

I’ve only watched a bit of the 3rd, but i’m startin to get a little alarmed. We are 12 games in and i’ve only seen the Nucks dominate a handful of games.
Its obviously foolish to judge tonights game, but I have a feeling that we’ve been hangin on again.

by Nuckels on Oct 29, 2009 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

All I can say is..let’s get to OT

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 9:50 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, at least get a point from this.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

12 shots, just heard it. Not good.

by Nuckels on Oct 29, 2009 9:50 PM PDT reply actions

Isn’t that fucked?
And watch Son of Sam score the OT winner. Then I’ll give Casual his Lotto #’s

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Son of Sam? Surely there must be a better name. How bout Dolph

by Nuckels on Oct 29, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

we haven’t figured one out yet

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Am I ever glad that I skipped the PPV. Games like this are coming to often.

by Nuckels on Oct 29, 2009 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

I should move to LA

$21 for a Kings ticket, hot dog and soda? SOLD! Throw in a beer per period and you’re looking at $50 or so (less than a GM Place ticket) for a good night!

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 9:54 PM PDT reply actions

Weathers not bad either.

by Nuckels on Oct 29, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Hehe, when I think “low cost of living”, I think SoCal.

by Passive Voice on Oct 29, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha, well at least hockey is cheap apparently!

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Geeeeeez

Our D was playing touch football with Kopitar there.

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 9:57 PM PDT reply actions

Okay, maybe unfair after seeing the replay

It was Grabner, and actually he walked a tightrope between holding him up and taking a hooking penalty

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

YAY!!!! WE GOT A POINT! RAYZOR’s FIRST POINT! WOOOO!!!

C’mon guys…I’m trying here

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 9:59 PM PDT reply actions

Raycroft looks like a cool character

In the battle of the strong, victory goes to the brave.

by javaball on Oct 29, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha, yeah good optimism!

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm thinking Sedin

In the battle of the strong, victory goes to the brave.

by javaball on Oct 29, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Raycroft

Has actually IMRPOVED his stats! Came in with a 1.14 GAA, and his GAA for the game is 1.00!

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

Bob Cole at FSN Los Angeles?

The Kings announcer just called Henrik “Sundin” – TWICE.

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

And he called Grabner “Grayb-ner”

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

guess he wanted to take away some "grabbiness" from him

In the battle of the strong, victory goes to the brave.

by javaball on Oct 29, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Samuelsson, sigh.

Wow, you’re good.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Another example

of AV’s complete lack of offensive sense.

Mason-no-finish- Raymond 2nd choice in the shootout?

by yoata on Oct 30, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

So…who do you take in the SO?

Samuelsson
Hank
Schneider

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 10:07 PM PDT reply actions

Kopitar, Frolov, Brown

Samuelsson, Kesler, Grabner

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 10:08 PM PDT reply actions

Grabner, Raymond, Kesler

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

Rayzor got a piece of it, close.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 10:11 PM PDT reply actions

The net was off before Raymond shot!

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn’t really affect where he put the puck though

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha, Shorty called the spin move too.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 10:11 PM PDT reply actions

as you called it

In the battle of the strong, victory goes to the brave.

by javaball on Oct 29, 2009 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Son of Sam! 0 for 3…….1 for 4!!! WOOO!!!

In the battle of the strong, victory goes to the brave.

by javaball on Oct 29, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice playing in front of the “home” fans.

Go enjoy the Hip now boys!

vancitydan

by vancitydan on Oct 29, 2009 10:14 PM PDT reply actions

Wow

Only saw less than half the game, but it didn’t look pretty. But I am not going to complain and will take the 2 points!

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:15 PM PDT reply actions

Schneider in net tomorrow? Hope they step it up a bit against the Ducks.

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:16 PM PDT reply actions

And now we have an idea of how the home team feels when a bunch of OUR fans are louder than them on the road.

Did you hear the Go Canucks Go chant?

vancitydan

by vancitydan on Oct 29, 2009 10:17 PM PDT reply actions

Kes just called it a “greasy” win

by vancitydan on Oct 29, 2009 10:18 PM PDT reply actions

Night folks! Go Nucks, and see y’all back here soon.

by nucksandpucks on Oct 29, 2009 10:21 PM PDT reply actions

Whoever said it before was right: Every Canucks game is like an episode of Survivor. Bolduc was the victim tonight.

by cyxj on Oct 29, 2009 10:23 PM PDT reply actions

Every Canucks game is a lesson in stress

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 29, 2009 10:35 PM PDT reply actions

The Kings did have 31 shots…but a lot was from the point and from the outside.

Good defensive line there with Rome etc until Kopitar had a few rushes in the 3rd.

Fuck, another injury though..Murphy said it was a shoulder on the post game.

So..Desbiens? Bliznak? Who’s left in Manitoba?

vancitydan

by vancitydan on Oct 29, 2009 10:47 PM PDT reply actions
