Disturbing Canucks Trend
Top Five Even-Strength Scoring
- 2008-09 Points: 234
- 2009-10 Projected Points: 171
- Projected Drop-off: 26.9%
Rest of the Roster Even-Strength Scoring
- 2008-09 Points: 126
- 2009-10 Projected Points: 45
- Projected Dropoff: 62.3%
The above stats are from Jonathan Willis, who has a great post up at Hockey or Die about the Canucks' lack of scoring depth at even strength. Check it out. Personally, I'd say the trend is disturbing, but is going to improve. It HAS to. Guys like Bernier, Wellwood, Raymond and the D are going to put up more points than they have so far (on average). Either that, or, like I jokingly mentioned at Willis' site, Luongo is going to have to provide 2-1 wins for the Canucks all year.

Small Sample Size Alert!
They’ll be fine. And if not, they’ll go get someone else. Who knows, maybe getting some early season time out of Raymond, Grabner, Shirokov, etc. will be good for them down the road, when they could perhaps be used as trade bait.
It’s much too early to worry about those stats. Too many guys aren’t even rolling yet. I’d like to see those #’s in December.
Still though, Willis put it together, I was impressed with it. Eye candy it is.

Sample size? Are you kidding? Mason Raymond for example, had been on pace for a mere 10 goals this year, but now he’s on pace for over 30. So Raymond alone added 20 goals to our season totals. 20 goals! By a single player in a single game! I bet the other teams in the league will just concede us the cup.
I’ve been bitching about the ES numbers for awhile and this is really where Sedin is missed. Henrik isn’t awful, but the dynamics between the two are clear: last year they have 53 combined goals but only 13 – or 25% basically – came on the man advantage. And though the first line seemed better last night, there’s still only one line reliably producing. The bottom six needs to step it up, but it’s not just them. Burrrows hasn’t scored in six games. Some of the call-ups (Bolduc and Shirokov in particular) will need to start finding the back of the net as well.

Shanahan
His name has been floating around these parts for a few days now, and I hope MG has at least made that call. Certainly could not hurt.
Yeah, but isn’t Shanny a PP specialist as well? Plus, I don’t think he wants to leave the East Coast.

Right, I think he isn’t leaving the EST for his family.

by top 5 is he including demo and d sedin? cause then i would definately expect a dropoff, considering they aren’t playing..
and if he isn’t including them, doesn’t that mean the top 5 would include more secondary guys? which means that the new “secondary” scoring would include bolduc and glass and guys like that?
You have to read his article. It sorta talks about that.

It’s way, way too early to be worrying about;
- lack of scoring depth
- who to trade for ‘that one player to put us over the top’
-what to wear to the cotillion
We’ve just won 3 in a row, let’s enjoy it. Things are starting to turn around.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
I always thought the neuroses...
Was just part of the singular joy of being a Canucks fan.

what to wear to the cotillion
Genius. I actually laughed out loud at that one. Remember the episode of the OC when they had Cotillion? And Marrisa’s dad got punched by Holly’s dad cause he stole his money? That was so good. I love that show.
I was in Stony Plain and Lloydminster all weekend and didn’t see the games but it sounds like Luongo is rounding into form? I am not too worried about the scoring right now. Schneider will help. Danny will be back soon and then we will start to have a healthier look. Plus as long as the PP is 4th and much better than last year we can afford to have slightly less goals at ES.

Its because our team doesn’t quite match the city everyone puts at the top of those “where to live” lists they create… drives us nuts that some shithole like Edmonton had all those Cups, and even fucking tobacco farmers in Carolina got something we didn’t.
“Ohhh yessss I LOVE Vancouver, it was soooo pretty when we visited last year”
How’s that for a rationalization?
Honestly though…I know a Cup is coming one day….It IS! (stop smirking!)
All the rest of this shit will just make it sweeter then…
Right? Right?

Disturbing Canuck Post
Let’s all just blame Zandberg. Channeling his inner Gallagher and finding the most depressing topic available.
Stop reading the Mayan calendar, Sean.
Thats OK Sean…keep being TG Jr…no one could get to his level of douchebaggery anyhow…little harsh kes’?
Maybe an Ed Willes Jr to start?
BTW Sean, who is leading our pool? I thought I was doing OK until I saw this…

Just having fun Dan.
Sean and Mike do a great job keeping us busy with posts like these to fill the dead space between games. It’s great stuff for encouraging discussion and / or debate.
This is the only site I’ve ever found where the content and people replying to said content have been interesting and informative enough for to even bother joining in.
That being said… Lynch the mods !!!!!
I caught your sarcasm :) You know me as a positive guy. After all, I said in the post:
I’d say the trend is disturbing, but is going to improve. It HAS to.
It’s not my fault you guys have to watch Dr. Phil to get through your week! haha
Like Kesrows said, we’re putting conversational stuff out there.

Totally dude…its why I write for another website, and spend the other free time here with you guys.
For the fun and conversation…wasn’t really chastising you kes’…just fucking with ya’…
Dr Phil….? Hell no, maybe whatever is on the sports channels. Tues and Wed. have been great with the Champions League.
Watching the Leaf, 5 min left in and up 3-1…looks like their first …so farrrrrr

Sample size aside
How is this a surprise to anyone?
Offensive production beyond (and even somewhat within) the top 5 forwards on this team is based far more on hope than anything else, and that could be seen, for those who chose to look at it objectively, before the season started.
I don’t recall secondary scoring also meaning “Absolutely consistent throughout the year.”
I’m sure it’s fun to look at all these numbers and worry our pretty little heads off, but honestly? You don’t need a bunch of tables and percentages to know that 1) The fourth line isn’t scoring 2) The second and third line need to start scoring even-strength and 3) These numbers don’t even make sense in the long run when we’ve been mired with short-term injuries.
Or to know that
1) the 4th line will never score 2) the likelihood of the 3rd line scoring much this year as it is made up now is slim.
If we wanted the 4th line to score, then we would’ve kept Hodgson and Grabner at the start of the season and sent down Glass and Rypien or something to that effect.
And as for the third line, as they’re made up of now, won’t probably last long. As Daniel and Hansen come back from injury, it’s obviously going to be shaken up. I believe that was the idea of having so many forwards, not only for depth in case of injury, but also to for everyone to challenge each other to produce with the fear of being sent to the Moose.
by thelastjohnny on Oct 26, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Well
you said “the 4th line isn’t scoring”, to me that would indicate that it was expected they would, if you say it wasn’t, I couldn’t agree more, though I think some might have.
I also think the 3rd line needs to change, especially if it ends up including Wellfed and Raymond and they continue to do nothing offensively, but even Bernier, who is doing ok, is overpaid to be a 3rd liner but hasn’t been good enough to be moved up.
Canucks brass, yes, the fine folks that would have us believe this team is some great improvement over the last… or the one before that for that matter…
I think, until further notice, the 2nd line remains intact, with Raymond and Grabner bookending Kes. If changes are made, it’ll be between the 1st, 3rd and 4th lines. If/when Grabs or Raymond begins consistently sucking, then the 2nd line is tinkered with.

I am hoping that Burrows will play better and get a chance on line 1 when Dank returns. He somehow seemed to suffer from the loss of Dank too, didn’t he? Maybe I’m being too sentimental.
by Sean Zandberg on Oct 26, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Kind of thought the “BQ” Line looked like a good checking line that will contribute something offensively.
Listen to us though, totally ripping through the lineup after the first success of the season, and when the lines we are talking about have only just been together.
Hell, the best line has only been together for what…3-4 games? Lets just worry more about it as the injuries and poor play dictate…you know?
Uh oh…3-2 Leafs now…come on Buds
Feel like Schneider’s character in Waterboy…

What? After all that hell you caused at PPP and you pullin for the Leafs? That’s just cold, man. Cold.
Oh, end of the 2nd period. They have plenty of time to fuck it up yet.

you watching the leafs game too?
i’m over at PPP talking to those goons again

GO CANUCKS GO!
You know Sean, I honestly don’t get “all the hell”…really. I went back and read the exchange, and I thought it was with good humour back and forth, until they labelled me a troll. Then it was a gang pile.
I didn’t really say anything inflammatory. Just that they got to expect the shit that comes along with being the richest team and that it was all in jest…. They seemed in good humour the day before…guess they woke up the next day and had game day jitters or something…maybe just hungover…I don’t know.
Whatever…I imagine I could have been a little more sensitive to their “feelings”, but they could have been a little less “douchey”. I did try to let them know it wasn’t intentional…just a misunderstanding. At least thats what my lawyer said… ;-)
I do like the Leafs…we all have a residual interest from the force feeding on the CBC …at least anyone of a certain age from a rural place in Canada. Pre STV and the Cable Universe, that was it.
Besides, the game is actually not bad….3 PP goals so far…3rd period coming up…if you can handle the jumpy feed.
vancitydan
5-2 Leafs and apparently Niedermayer has lost his mind.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
Welll…4 min…he hit Grabovski, but in Scotty’s defense, Grabs has been trying to dive to call penalties on a couple occasions.
It sure is Slapshot hockey though…plenty of truculence, and a fair bit of belligerence
vancitydan
Five of their six goals on the power play.
53 minutes in penalties.
You know, this is what I was expecting from a Burke’s Team vs Burke’s ex-Team. Out of control hockey. Looks like it was exciting, wish I could’ve watched it.

I’m all for them beating a Western Conference team, even more so if it’s a NW Division rival.

Oh yeah, it was great watching the Ducks fail that miserably!
by Sean Zandberg on Oct 26, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions
Nah, I never meant to imply that the fourth line should be scoring some sort of measurable. Sure everyone talks about them chipping in from time to time, but with the ice time they get, it’s not really realistic to ask for much.
As for the third line, I don’t see it changing until people get back from injury. For now, they’ll just be given time to show they deserve to be there.
And yes, the Canucks brass say that because it’s a business and they want to sell tickets. If the team isn’t better than a team that didn’t even make it to the third round of the playoffs, then why should we bother showing up?
by thelastjohnny on Oct 26, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions
True
but that 4th line wouldn’t score no matter how much time they got, and not sure the same couldn’t be said about the 3rd line either, at least part of it.
yoata, you’re the energizer bunny of doom, my friend. Hey, didja notice Raymond is on pace for over 20 goals this year? Plus his projected total is still accelerating!
Is it doom? Or is it objectivity and it seems like doom compared to most Canucks fans blind and hopeless optimism?
by Section 312 on Oct 27, 2009 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions
objectivity leaning on the side of negativity :) At least you aren’t always Nostradamus, yoata. There is some light there. I’ve learned over time to appreciate your objectiveness

Why thank you
Sean, and rest assured, when deserved, you’ll see more positivity.
I was real high on Edler before the season and he’s not faring so well, but I still think he’ll come around, and I still think Hansen will surprise many if he gets a real chance.
Uh
sorry but he had one bounce off his foot and the other was an EN, when he actually finishes or even sets somebody up, I’ll give him credit, you want to do so before then go for it.
Ah! In the 7-1 kill of the Habs, Raymond scored a beauty. Is that who you are referring to?
