Perfect! Demitra is going to sit out the whole final year of his contract, and now we can make a trade if somebody in the top 6 doesn’t pan out. This is a good day!

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 2:11 PM PDT reply actions

I had a gut feeling when he hit the LTIR and news of his lack of recuperation hit we we’re likely to see him this calendar year. Now I don’t think we’ll see him again. Meh, he gave us an decent one year, not bad for a hired gun.

He was decent, that’s for sure. But I never liked this signing from the start. Never was a fan of Demo. Cruel, yes. But time to move on.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

It was about four years too late. Now the question is what’s next. Vancouver probably already needed another top #6 guy when Demo was thought to be close to returning. I guess they can still skate by without, but a package deal with Schneider and some other pieces now sounds pretty good.

That sounds great. Who would/could we get though?

Bring me Stanley. Alive if possible, dead... just as good.

The CDC is wetting themselves over Nathan Horton, who’s making $4 million a year (second highest guy on the Panthers) but so is Demo. But honestly I have no idea. Horton sounds like a pipe dream.

Sure, I’ll bite on that guy. Those ideals were spawned by Eklund though.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

That explains the pipe dream. Better question is who needs a goalie along with maybe a spare defenseman or forward prospect? A team like LA has Frolov but that’s again pie in the sky thinking. And they just extended Quick today.

Tampa, Chicago, Montreal all could use a goaltending boost and have some forwards to spare. I think.

I’d consider that an improvement. I hope we’ll have some cap space available for the next off-season though. I would love it if we could pick up one of the Blackhawks stars in FA (I believe Ladd and Toews are available).

Capgeek has us at 39 million for next year with the possibility guys like Mitchell, Johnson, Demo, Schenider and Raycroft dropping off the docket. Definitely have some wiggle room in there.

Well, we take headcases here. Sergei Kostitsyn…

Um no.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 4:59 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t know why anyone considers this good news. We had a shortage of top-6 forwards already, even with Demitra in the lineup. He’s way better than anyone we have to replace him, and we REALLY could have used him when D.Sedin went down.

Cap space is great and all, except when there’s nobody available to spend it on. Had we known this on July 1, they could have picked up some decent players. But right now, teams just aren’t looking to shed great top-6 forwards.

This really bums me out.

by headspacej on Oct 23, 2009 5:05 PM PDT reply actions

No Heady…but there are teams that are looking at their team and seeing holes at goalie and or defense that may have a surfeit of forwards…

Andrew Brunette and a pick for Grabner and Lukowich?

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Versteeg for Schneider and a pick?

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Chi needs a proven goalie this year for a run at the cup before their team gets diluted because of the cap. But Schneider ain’t proven. He’s a good goalie prospect for the future, but why would Chi give up any talent at all for a prospect before the year is out and their cup run, however it turns out, is over? They’ll want as much talent as they can keep for this year.

If we were to trade w/Chi, maybe after the year ends, Schneider for a fw, then Brouwer is cheaper than Versteeg, and less yappy, too. Mind you, after that pass he made to Toews….

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It looks to me like Chicago is going to have to shed some salary soon when Hossa comes back.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoa, I forgot about Hossa. How much salary do they need to lose?

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Check this out. Hossa’s gonna be a $7.9 million cap hit. This is why Brian Campbell’s salary gets cursed so often.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yikes! Well, if I were running the Hawks, I sure wouldn’t trade Brouwer cuz he’s an obvious depth chart replacement – just move him up – after you trade away Buffy or Versteeg (or both? they’re w-a-y over) to get back under the cap.

And then you look at their free agent situation and … this year is by far their best chance at a cup, even if/after they ditch some talent to get under the cap.

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, they almost have to win it NOW.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Desperate, are they? Need to talk trade, do they? (rubs hands in glee…)

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I think that those kind of teams are ones to target…or maybe struggling teams who have struggling guys who need a change of scenery.
Then again..you just never know what can happen.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I do think that Gillis isn’t going to rush into anything though. Grabner will get his shot for now and whoever else. If the team struggles badly, then I could see MG pulling the trigger. Hell, the season is only 9 games in.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed. Canucks still have Grabner and Shirokov and Hansen in the wings, but in terms of a known, dependable sniper … we could always use another, so we’ll see what they do. It is too early to make a call, yet (tho maybe not if you’re Chi; when does Hossa come back?)

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

November? December? They are getting the same luxury as we are with Donut..I mean Demo.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

ok, so i have a question. i try to follow other teams, but i usually stick to the canucks, anyway, isn’t troy brouwer a 4th liner for chicago? or does he have any potential to be a top 6? i wouldn’t know, i don’t follow chicago’s drafting and prospects (or former prospects…)

by kiyotok on Oct 23, 2009 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Dunno, but Brouwer usually seems to look good when I see him. Plus he’s cheap ($1m/year for now) and I don’t share the view that with Demitra out our cap woes are over. I think we’re at or near it for a while and every dollar counts.

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

We have that much room this year? Over $3m? I mean, yeah, we gotta sign Kesler and some others but we’re better off than I thought, aren’t we?

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

It doesn’t hurt that Luko got sent down to the Moose either. This number looks at lot less better when Schneider comes back as well. Still, there is a bit of a cushion there.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Judgin by his stats, I’d say he has more potential than a 4th liner by far.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

right, very true. just that i though seeing him on the 4th line in the playoffs last year, but maybe thats just me

by kiyotok on Oct 23, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

BTW, it hasn’t been confirmed that Demo is gone for the year, has it?

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

All I heard was that they scoped his shoulder again. Will he be back this year? I havent heard a thing on that either way. If he comes back late, just in time for a stretch run and the playoffs, then his cap hit won;t be a prob by then, I suspect.

by casual on Oct 23, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

TSN quoted Hendricks Hockey, who claimed from one of their sources that Demo was likely to miss the rest of the season.
Circle jerk. Don’t know what to believe.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 23, 2009 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

This is bad news

I don’t care what y’all and the media say on this but Demo puts out 40-50 pts and cements a 2nd line. 1st or 3rd duties if need be. The RPM was huge last year because of the changes in defensive matchups against our top lines. Having a twin down and no second line makes us an easy defensive matchup now. Bernier, Raymond, Grabner and Shirokov need to step up (priority in that order) if this team expects to be .500 by December. Luongo and the defense can only do so much if they can’t put the damn thing in the other net. My NHL10 Vancouver Canucks team has so much depth (and no I don’t do trades) and we are polar opposites of this idealist view now. Damn.

by Linden4evah on Oct 23, 2009 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

For starters, Sundin isn’t here anymore. RPM is dead.
Secondly, fuck Demitra. If a team relies on him to be successful they are doomed. While I can appreciate his 20 goal additive…I’m sure we can find that elsewhere; on a guy who isn’t made of glass.
I think we can be 500 without Demo. Just my opinion.

by Sean Zandberg on Oct 24, 2009 1:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with his order of priority, re: Bernier, Raymond and Grabner. If the three of them step up (like they did in Chicago) we’ll be fine.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big Demo fan either and I wish his contract was for only 1yr. But whats done is done. If this team can get two lines humming like last year we can be lethal with our supposed Dmen and Lou.

If we are going to be out $10-15 million in player value for an extended period of time, we are not going to do well in this league. Having only four legit top six players (and many wouldn’t count Burrows or Samuelsson even) hurts not only at even strength but also on the effort level and quality on the PP and PK. Its a team sport after all.

We can sustain the momentum from that bone rattling hit on Toews and come from behind for awhile but as we know all to well every point from wins and OTLs is vital to make the playoffs – where the real game is played. I really really hope Berniers hands start working and not-so-Wellfed getting a point or two would be nice freakin bonus.
