Mitchell's Hit On Toews
Not the best quality (it's all I could find at the moment), There we go, found a better quality one. What do you think about the hit: clean or dirty?

WHAT?
How is this even a relevant topic of discussion? This was absolutely 100% undebatebly a clean hit.
ditto
totally clean. Toews should keep his head up.

Looks clean to me.
Shoulder on shoulder, open ice, had the puck……..good hit.
I’m tired of seeing players try to start fights after big hits though…..

Toews should be asking his teammate…what are you doing passing me the puck with that big f*er bearing down on me???
That was a beauty…but I do hope the kid is OK.
Clean hit.
100%.
I don’t agree with starting fights after those types of hits either. Believe it or not, Versteeg vs Mitchell isn’t a matchup us Hawks fans are dying to see. Last thing we need is two players getting wrecked as a result of one hit. I hope Toews is okay though. Doesn’t look like there was much impact to the head, but the Chicago feed didn’t show the wobbling to the bench. Maybe he’ll take a look at those new Messier helmets now.

Usually I hate the fights after a clean hit… but I think any fights after this hit were OK… If someone nails your captain you should probably stand up to them just as I’d expect Toews to do for them.. That’s why I’m ok with the Hawks getting the penalty after it.
Yeah. As much as I hate fights after clean hits, and it cost us a chance to tie on a breakaway (though that didn’t end up mattering), Toews had just been LEVELED. Chicago can’t just sit back and take that.

so im a little new to ice hockey and my knowledge on the rules is a little skew. so can some one explain why the fuck the play was stopped after a clean hit and the fighting was off the puck ??
by svenfromsweeden on Oct 21, 2009 10:05 PM PDT reply actions
pretty sure they stop the play whenever there is a fight regardless of the situation for the safety of the players to make sure the linesmen can get over there to monitor. if the refs and linesmen had to keep an eye on the play and the fight it would be hard to control the situation.
still sucks balls in that situation though, to have to give up a 2 on 0 after the cleanest obliteration i’ve ever seen.
clean hit but.....
clean hit but uncalled for. Good teams never go after star players. Hawks never went after the Sundin twins did they?? you guys now im right. that was uncalled for. they way he was skateing..looks like to me he was intending on hurting him no matter what he was going to do. I hope he is going to be ok. good game though.
Uncalled for?
If Keith or Seabrook caught one of the twins with their head down like that, I’d be pissed, but more so at our guys for not having their heads up. Besides, teams have always targeted the Sedins in the playoffs – maybe not with big, open-ice hits, but constant pounding. It’s gamesmanship.
Additionally, if you’re hitting someone, you’re trying to hurt them. It’s where you try to injure someone where you cross the line, and Willie clearly wasn’t doing that here. He wasn’t trying to take out a knee or cause a concussion, just to send Toews back to the bench with a bruise and less of an idea of where he’s standing at the moment.
Definitely a good game though, I love having more teams that bring out the intense playoff-type atmosphere.
wrong again
I’d expect Seabrook, Eager, Buff or any other Hawk to make that hit if any other team was coming across the ice.

Oh c’mon. Aim to kill. Don’t be a hippy. I step into a guy and I wanna hurt him. Mission accomplished, Mitchell. Love it.

Actually
I agree with TheBunk. He did say Mitchell was trying to hurt Toews, but not permanently injure him with a cheap knee on knee or elbow to the head (eg a penalty)
Mitchell said post game:
“I had no choice,” Mitchell said. “If I swung at the puck or swung at his stick, it would have been a 3-on-2. I got him pretty good. Hopefully he’s alright. It was a clean hit but you don’t want to see anyone get hurt.”
Players say that and are generally lying. Of course they want to hurt the guy. It’s just bad karma to suggest that you were trying to hurt him. Why stir the pot any further? The damage was done.
Back to what Bunk was saying: I think I misinterpreted his meaning of hurting somebody.
by Sean Zandberg on Oct 22, 2009 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I think you nailed it on the head here Sean.
You’re always trying to hurt the other guy a little bit when you hit him, but of course you can’t actually come out and say that. I was just trying to draw the minor linguistic distinction – I’m OK with anybody trying to hurt someone with a bodycheck, but not to injure them with a cheap shot. I wish it was OK for people to come out and say this, but the NHL isn’t exactly renowned for full disclosure and honesty in the media (see any playoff injury report).
What?
Guys are lying about not wanting the other guy hurt?
I think you are missing the important part of what he’s saying, which is that first and foremost he was playing the man, not the puck, usually preferrable when defending, and in this case the pace each was on in order for Mitchell to make sure he took the man = big collision and only one was ready for it.
That’s hockey and I don’t think for a minute it usually has bad intentions. Put a guy on his ass, sure, make him think about something other than scoring? Absolutely. Hurt him? Nah, not usually, sometimes maybe, but these guys are all pros making their living at this game they love, I don’t think too many have that kind of conscious malice.
I didn’t miss his important point of not wanting a 3 on 2 the other way. But I stand by my opinion that these kind of freight train hits are meant to hurt the other guy, I don’t care who it is. And I’m fine with that.

Nimi
I think tonight showed me why Nimi should start, just needs a little more tweeking and more starts. We should be unstopable when egar and hossa come back.
Sven…the rule needs to be changed there. The Hawks got the minor penalty, but they were rewarded for fighting.
100% clean fucking hit. As Valk said about it on Sportsnet, he could have REALLY hurt him. Imagine if he left his feet or even pushed his hands into his face as well.
He did neither.
Redtribe.
He has to make that hit. Star player or no, he had the puck…this aint tiddleywinks. He hit a player that had his head down. It happens in hockey. As I said above, he could have KILLED him and just hit him. It was all Toews speed into the hit that made it look so bad.

Mitchell is a bitch..
but that was a clean hit.
As much as it pains me… Toews should watch for players coming across the neutral zone like that. I hope he’s not hurt but I hope that’s a lesson to him..

Hit
That was as clean a hit as I’ve ever seen, Mitchell could have have killed Teows if he wanted to.
Whats the big deal?
Notice how Mitchell's arm and shoulder never rose
He threw a big hit without the upward motion that a lot of younger players do these days to inflict maximum damage. He clearly aimed for the body. It was as clean as a big hit can be.
Clean. It’s too bad it wasn’t Kane.

A clean hit for sure…not sure if there is even any question about that. Any one who says this was uncalled for has not followed these two teams over the last couple seasons, there is no love lost here.
Also as far as going “after” their captain, think about how many times Dustin Byfuglien has gone after our captain…
So glad we won this game… finally some confidence!
OK, the group says clean. She’s clean. Never really thought it wasn’t legal, but some may have disagreed. And if you the game I sure wouldn’t miss the next one (Nov 22) since the Hawks won’t forget that hit either.

It was definitely a clean hit, BUT....
…After watching the replay I noticed that Mitchell had just come out of the penalty box, while explains why Towes didn’t see him coming.
I’m sure Johnny probably gave a quick glance up the ice at the defence, didn’t see Mitchell (since he was just coming out of the box), and that created the perfect storm for a bone crunching hit.
Of course, being a Blues fan, I’m not complaining or anything. =)
by HuntsvilleBlues on Oct 22, 2009 7:00 AM PDT reply actions
Of course Blues…the most devestating hits are usually when the guy didn’t see it coming. What did your coaches tell you from the first time you played the game? “Keep your head up”
The guy that said the passer (Brouwer I believe ) owes him a beer owes him more than that. Should have kept the puck and tried it that way. He could see Mitchell coming right out of the penalty box. He couldn’t miss him, its right in his line of vision!
I bet thats what he said when he went over “Sorry Skipper, my bad”…which is what Tazer was responding to when the first thing he said at the bench was “Fuck…I had my head down…”
Fun to chat about it with everyone, but really, there couldn’t have been a cleaner hit. He kept himself tight and Toews basically ran into him.

It’s funny, because now that I’m at home with access to the youtube video, I realize that I was simply repeating exactly what the color commentator was saying on the broadcast. haha

its ok.
Im not pissed off or anything, Because I clearly know who is the better team overall and thats what really matters. like I mentioned earlier. This team was with out Seabrook and Towes for the final 7 min. which I believe killed it gor us,and Hossa and Eger is still to come.
Goaltending, goaltending, goaltending....
You must address this problem sooner than later to be a legitimate SC contender.
Just my honest opinion.

It's ok, and kudos to Toews
Clean hit, and lost in all this debate is that Toews didn’t lay on the ice crying and waiting for the play to stop. Good goin’ kid; you make hockey proud.
Can't argue with that statement.
I wouldn’t mind having the guy on our team, that’s for sure.
When do the Blues & Blackhawks play, anyways?

Absolutely. He gave ‘er the ol’ Ronni Francis after Stevens decked him.

In response to various comments
Hit was way clean. Chi needs goaltending. Kane and Huet to Anaheim for Giguere and a first round and a prospect as soon as hossa is healthy and in form. Selanne can’t have many more years left, so this fills clear needs for both teams.
by Beantown Canuck on Oct 22, 2009 7:54 AM PDT via mobile reply actions
Clean hit. Toews was skating through the neutral zone at top speed (or close to it) looking the wrong way on a suicide pass. That’s what happens. The Hawk who passed the puck owes him a beer for sure …
Despite the Canucks missing out on a scoring chance, I have no problem with the response from the Hawks. Their captain just got labelled – what else are they supposed to do?
Clips like that sum up why I love hockey.
My favorite comment so far
From “Hockey Fan” in the comments in the Province article:
Willy Mitchell should be charged criminally for his blind side hit on another player with intent to injure.

Haha...okay, Byfuglien, intent to injure? Nah...

reading through the comments…(welcome all you guys that saw the hit from other team’s sites…good to see you guys!)…I do find some funny. Tribe says he “clearly knows who the better team is”, and thats fine. We should have that attitude about our own team.
But then goes right to saying but “we have Seabs and Toews out the last 7 min…” WTF?
We can see that with a Sedin, a Salo, a Hansen and two long term injury listers…so what?
Yeah Yank…that one is definitely a “Internets” comment. Like I have a term I use for penalty calls that get my dander up. Its just a “New NHL” call and there is not much you can do about it. Penalties happen. Sort of like “Shit happens” without the fun of swearing.
I agree with everything Max Currie said in his post, and agree with Huntsville (love the pic on your avatar…) as well.
Goaltending is a problem. When a guy on the telecast (one with 400 something goals in the NHL and probably a few more in the playoffs ) like Ferraro points out that the guy is going down too early ( Huet’s problem too) , and he catches the puck “weird”…you know word will get around the NHL quick. Niemi should look forward to many more shots at his glove. And a LOT more “roof daddy” than the Canucks got last night…for sure.
Love it when we play the Hawks…you guys are like nice Flames fans. (there are a few…)
Not the other ones…Fuck those guys.
vancitydan
Schneider is a good target for the Hawks honestly, but then having two rookies in net isn’t the best idea either. Unless they dump Huet in the AHL.
'Nucks Misconduct - Housing Swedish Millionaires Since 2000.
The Hawks have a big problem in that this year is their best cup-run year; by next year the salary cap will have diluted their team. So really, they’ll be looking to trade for proven vet goaltending and they’ll likely be making that deal near the deadline, when someone else has given up on their own year and is looking to rebuild and has a older goalie with a few miles left.
Not sure what the price will be for, say, Khabiboulin or Giguere or Brodeur or Turco or whomever … but it’ll be higher in the spring than it is now. The Hawks will also want a young goalie for the future, but that deal can wait till after this year’s run at the cup is done.
I bet they go after Legace, and dump Huet.
