Demitra Has Shoulder Tendinitis, No ETA
Botchford at the Province shares the latest on Glass Joe with us (no not that one, the other one) today:
The Canucks revealed Thursday why Pavol Demitra has been slow to recover from offseason shoulder surgery.
Despite having had a medical procedure in May to repair tears to the front and back of his rotator cuff, Demitra remains out indefinitely. He hasn't been skating with the team and complained to The Province this week that there's "a lot of pain in the shoulder."
Head coach Alain Vigneault revealed Thursday the pain is from shoulder tendinitis, which means there is inflammation of the rotator cuff tendon.
I'm no doctor, so I'm going to pretend the Cleveland Clinic is because here's what they say about shoulder tendinitis.
What causes shoulder tendinitis/bursitis?
Tendinitis occurs as a result of sports injuries, by repetitive minor impact on the affected area or from a sudden, more serious injury. For instance, professional baseball players, swimmers, tennis players and golfers are susceptible to tendinitis in their shoulders, arms and elbows. Improper technique in any sport is one of the primary causes of overload on tissues including tendins, which can contribute to tendinitis.
Emphasis mine. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
OK, so what does Demo have to do to get over this?
How can you prevent shoulder tendinitis/bursitis?
Because most cases of tendinitis are caused by overuse, the best treatment is prevention. It is important to avoid or modify the activities that cause the problem. Underlying conditions such as improper posture or poor technique in sports or work must be corrected.Apply these basic rules when performing activities:
- Take it slow at first and gradually build up your activity level.
- Use limited force and limited repetitions
- Stop if unusual pain occurs.
Sorry, I couldn't help myself again with the emphasis.
Sit tight on those Demo jerseys folks. It's going to be awhile.

What a bummer. It seemed that fans were clamoring to get rid of Demitra in the preseason, but with D.Sedin injured, we need him now more than ever. I thought perhaps Gillis was happy enough to keep Demitra out longer than necessary for cap reasons, but I’m thinking that he’d be in there ASAP at this point if the shoulder was even somewhat ok.
When you plug Glass and Grabner into the forward lineup, it sure starts to look skimpy. I love Kesler and Burrows, but they’re not (yet) the kinds of players who can carry a line, never mind Wellwood or Bernier. I think many of us thought the forward depth looked really strong at the beginning of camp, but it’s a painful lesson to see what a few key injuries can do.
I worry about the next month or two for the Canucks. It’s not hard to imagine them going on a real tear like last season once they get Salo, M.Schneider, D.Sedin, Demitra, and Hansen (those five would actually make a pretty decent line on any NHL team!) back from injuries, and when Luongo hits his stride…but for the next six weeks it’s looking pretty grim. I hope they don’t dig a hole they can’t climb out of.

Good points
The forward lines look skimpy but again it just takes a handful to carry them. Daniel and Schneider (in theory) will get back first and if they can stay healthy and contribute, you may not notice Salo and Demitra being gone.
They need to play their best hockey right now. Not a fun test, but if they are a Cup contender, then they’ll hold their own.

Without the above 5 players in the lineup the team has to play exceptionally tight hockey with an emphasis on ‘D.’ They’ve done that a number of times in the past while missing injured players. Seems to me they know just how to do it and thst they’ll do it now.

Nothing wrong with a team that is supposed to have good D’ getting back to it.
Sure, it may cut down on the shots from the very highs they have been at, but I am OK with the “system” being adhered too more closely. Luongo making ( or Razer for that matter) saves from the outside because its all to the outside.
The same system where they have a coach that likes the organization so much that even though he was rumored to be a candidate for NHL gigs, he resigned a multi year deal with the Canucks. Scotty Arniel has Shark going…7 points now in I think 4 games…next callup?
They showed something of that on the PK last game, oh so long ago….
And according to this… http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=VAN&season=0910 they have some money to spend if they talk turkey with some desperate losing team…

Exactly. That was my first thought. If guys like Grabner and Shirokov can’t make it in the NHL this year (or over the next several weeks), a trade should happen. We should trade Hodgson….right yoata? Yoata?
I’m just kidding.

If only...
…the Leafs had anyone worth trading for on their desperate losing team…

The Leafs have plenty of players worth trading for, but after this tampering nonsense, you won’t see many Burke/Gillis deals in the future.
